La ricerca del dott. Francesco Galgani, basata su 223 fonti bibliografiche e corredata di osservazioni empiriche di interazione tra essere umano e macchina, è focalizzata sul rapporto tra l'uso della tecnomediazione nei rapporti umani e la solitudine degli individui. Il percorso espositivo, che parte dall'analisi dei possibili rapporti tra le persone e i contesti virtuali, con particolare attenzione per i nativi digitali, indaga il problema della solitudine, affrontato da molteplici punti di vista secondo la letteratura scientifica disponibile, e il suo accentuarsi in un mondo ipertecnologico. Per comprendere le cause all'origine della solitudine dell'essere umano moderno, è proposta anche un'analisi filogenetica della specie umana, mossa dalla tesi di fondo che maggiore è il distacco dalla natura e maggiore è la solitudine; un richiamo alle teorie dell'attaccamento, con un punto di vista che collega la vita adulta alle prime fasi di vita, dal concepimento in poi, completa il quadro. Oggi le persone sono sempre più sole e la maniera corrente di approcciarsi alla tecnologia, a cominciare dai social network e dalle connessioni in mobilità, aggrava tale condizione. L'uso e l'abuso di Internet viene inquadrato anche in un contesto giovanile problematico e fragile, fortemente influenzato da un certo tipo di uso precoce, invasivo e immersivo della tecnologia, con effetti che minano seriamente il benessere delle persone. Aspetti apparentemente solo psicologici, come le difficoltà relazionali, l'uso pervasivo di Facebook o i sentimenti di solitudine, vengono studiati anche sul piano biologico e neurologico, a livello di modificazioni cerebrali e di problemi anche seri di salute. La solitudine, l'uso della tecnologia e la condizione dei nativi digitali sono inseriti nel contesto dell'attuale società “liquida”, come definita da Baumann, nella quale i confini e i riferimenti sociali sono persi e un vuoto profondo segna l'esistenza degli individui e della società. Sono prese in considerazione anche le caratteristiche delle comunità online. Le evidenze documentate, in sintesi, confermano che quel “nutrimento affettivo” di cui ha un gran bisogno l’essere umano non può essere mediato da alcuna tecnologia e che, anzi, al crescere della fiducia nella tecnologia decresce quella negli esseri umani, fino al punto di poter pensare di fare a meno della compagnia altrui. In appendice sono proposti approfondimenti sull'uso di Internet e su alcune questioni importanti che riguardano quotidianamente e perlopiù inconsapevolmente la vita degli internauti.
