Zoroastre est regardé comme un prophète d’Ormusd, venu sous le règne de Gustasp pour réformer le magisme, en apportant au monde un livre dont le nom est Zend, Avesta, ou Zend-Avesta. Les anciens Persans veulent tous que Zoroastre soit antérieur à Moïse. Certains auteurs pensent qu’il était du nombre de ceux qui ont bâti la tour de Babel. Le livre du philosophe Giamasb s’exprime ainsi: «Treize cents ans après le déluge, Dieu envoya notre prophète Zerdascht.» La première fois que son nom retentit dans le monde antique, c’est vers le temps où Lycurgue et Solon donnent des lois à la Grèce, où Phérécide a pour disciples Thalès et Pythagore; l’empire des Césars, Rome, quitte à peine son berceau chaud encore des caresses d’une louve; le reste de l’Europe est plongé dans une profonde nuit. En Orient, Bouddha dispute l’Inde à Manou, tandis que Confucius essaie de moraliser la Chine; les dieux de l’Égypt e commencent à sortir de leur immobilité et l’antique Iran attend un sauveur. La plupart des auteurs grecs et latins veulent que Pythagore ait été le disciple de Zoroastre. Ils disent que Pythagore alla en Égypte avec des lettres de Polycrate, tyran de Samos, adressées au roi Amasis, et que, confondu parmi les Égyptiens que l’armée de Cambyse fit prisonniers, il fut envoyé avec eux à Babylone, qu’il trouva dans cette ville un homme célèbre, nommé Zoroastre, auquel il s’attacha.
