The Teachings of Zoroaster and the Philosophy of the Parsi Religion is an overview of Zoroastrianism written by S.A. Kapadia. This guide is intended as an introduction to the religion to those unfamiliar with the teachings of Zoroaster and the beliefs of the Parsi. Kapadia's book is primarily intended for Western readers with little to no knowledge of Zoroastrianism. The book begins with an introduction to the Parsi people, and a brief discussion of their religious belief prior to the rise of Zoroastrianism. From there, the book progress to discuss Zoroaster, the founder of the religion and a man believed to have been born in what is now Iran. Kapadia then spends the remainder of the text providing the reader with an overview of the core beliefs and values of Zoroastrianism, from hygienic laws, to the sanctity of marriage, to the immortality of the soul. The Teachings of Zoroaster and the Philosophy of the Parsi Religion achieves its goal of introducing the reader to this religion. One who opens this book with little or no knowledge of the religion will surely close the back cover feeling they have gained a good deal of insight. Kapadia's interpretations of Zoroaster's teachings are clear and presented in basic language, and thus this is a text that could well be used in an educational setting to teach students about one of the world's religions. As an introduction to the religion, The Teachings of Zoroaster and the Philosophy of the Parsi Religion is a success, Kapadia's book providing a worthy overview of Zoroastrianism. For those interested in learning about the religion, or for teachers instructing a course on spirituality around the world, this book is recommended. Excerpt from The Treasure of the Magi: A Study of Modern Zoroastrianism The writers of this series of volumes on the variant forms of religious life in India are governed in their work by two impelling motives. I. They endeavour to work in the sincere and sympathetic spirit of science. They desire to understand the perplexingly involved developments of thought and life in India and dis passionately to estimate their value. They recognize the futility of any such attempt to understand and evaluate, unless it is grounded in a thorough historical study of the phenomena investigated. In recognizing this fact they do no more than share what is common ground among all modern students of religion of any repute. But they also believe that it is meces sary to set the practical side of each system in living relation to the beliefs and the literature, and that, in this regard, the close and direct contact which they have each had with Indian religious life ought to prove a source of valuable light. For, until a clear understanding has been gained of the practical influence exerted by the habits of worship, by the practice of the ascetic, devotional, or occult discipline, by the social organization and by the family system, the real impact of the faith Upon the life of the individual and the community cannot be estimated; and, without the advantage of extended personal intercourse, a trustworthy account of the religious experience of a community can scarcely be achieved by even the most careful student. Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Mazdayasnian Religion Under the Sassanids To answer this I have consulted those of the Pehlevi treatises which seem to have a right to be reckoned among the writings of the Sassanide epoch, and I have arranged in a philosophical order the various precepts which are found therein. I have scarcely touched therein upon the questions of onjgin or Of comparison with other systems. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Zoroastrianism Ancient and Modern: Comprising a Review of Dr. Dhalla's Book of Zoroastrian Theology The courageous action of that great Parsi, the late lamented Sir Dinshah Dhanjibhai Davar in convincing his colleagues on the board of the Parsi Panchayat Trustees, that Dr. Dhalla's book on Zoroastrian Theology was not worthy of the Trustees support, inasmuch as it was written along heterodox lines that were calculated to injure the deep-rooted religious sentiments of the large majority of his co-religionists, by reason of the doubts and ridicule cast therein on their time-hallowed tenets and practices, aroused great indignation and much recrimination in the tiny camp of so-called Keformers, but gave intense satisfaction to the community at large. It will be a matter of further satisfaction to my co-religionists (barring a handful of misguided Progress(! )-valas) that Ervad Pheroze Shahpoorji Masani, that energetic, enthusiastic and learned Athornan, who has won deserved popularity by his courageous efforts after religious revival and social purity, should have undertaken the task of publishing a detailed reply to the many harmful doctrines and interpretations which Dr. Dhalla has ventilated in that book. It is no doubt true that the ideas embodied in "Zoroastrian Theology" are not in any sense new or original, but are repetitions of what a thimbleful of self-styled reformers(!) have been moving heaven and earth, in season and out of season, to promulgate in the Parsi community; and though the latter, as a whole, has treated such attempts with silent con tempt, and turned a sneering deaf-ear to the fads of the more or less materialistic Sudharavalas, it might be as well to have in print a reply to these oft repeated arguments from one who is well qualified to refute them. Ervad Masani has received high University education and has for nearly twelve years made a study of the Parsi Scriptures in their original languages, the Avesta and Pahlavi. Excerpt from A Modern Zoroastrian Polarity is such a word. It sums up what Emer son says in his Essay on Compensation: Polarity, or action and reaction, we meet in every part of Nature; in darkness and light; in the ebb and flow of waters; in male and female; in the inspiration and expiration of plants and animals in the undulations of fluids and of sound; in the centripetal and centrifugal gravity; in electricity, galvanism, and chemical affinity. Super induce Magnetism at one end of a needle, the opposite Magnetism takes place at the other end. If the South attracts, the North repels. An inevitable dualism besets nature, so that each thing is a half, and suggests another to make it whole: as spirit, matter man, woman; odd, even; subjective, objective; in, out; upper, under; motion, rest; yea, nay.
