Hans Bender, 1919 in Mühlhausen im Kraichgau geboren, war legendärer Gründer und Herausgeber der noch heute bedeutendsten deutschen Literaturzeitschrift Akzente und war auch als Herausgeber berühmter Anthologien mit nahezu allen Schriftstellern der Nachkriegszeit eng verbunden. Als solcher hat er die Literatur der Bundesrepublik wie kaum ein zweiter geprägt. Viele junge Talente hat er entdeckt und gefördert. Aber Hans Bender war auch selbst Schriftsteller, Verfasser von Lyrik, Kurzgeschichten und Romanen. Im Alter bevorzugte er die für ihn typischen Ausdrucksformen des Vierzeilers und der Aufzeichnung, in denen er seine stille, hintergründige, von feinem Humor gekennzeichnete Sprache wunderbar zum Ausdruck brachte. Arnold Stadler, wurde im Gründungsjahr der Akzente 1954, in Meßkirch in Baden geboren. Wie viele andere hat auch er seine ersten Veröffentlichungen und danach die Einladung ins Literarische Colloquium Berlin dem unermüdlichen Förderer guter Literatur Hans Bender zu verdanken. Schon im Jahre 1999 mit nur 45 Jahren erhielt Stadler den renommiertesten deutschen Literaturpreis, den Georg Büchner Preis, für seine hintergründige, humorvolle, dem Trotzdemschönen des Lebens verpflichtete hinreißende Prosa zuerkannt. Hans Bender und Arnold Stadler verband eine enge Freundschaft. Ilka Scheidgen war mit Hans Bender 35 Jahre lang befreundet bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 2015. Mit beiden Schriftstellern konnte Ilka Scheidgen ausführliche Gespräche führen, die sich in diesem Doppelporträtband nachlesen lassen. In den Porträts lassen sich Leben, Werk und Wirken zweier bedeutender Schriftsteller nachvollziehen.

Christian Lehnert, 1969 in Dresden geboren, wuchs in der DDR-Zeit systemkonform auf. Doch immer mehr fühlte er sich ausgehungert nach einer wahrhaftigen Sprache, die nicht opportunistisch mit zweierlei Zungen redete. So begann für ihn der Weg zum christlichen Glauben, der schließlich zu einem Studium der evangelischen Theologie, Religionswissenschaft und Orientalistik führte. Als Bausoldat auf Prora hatte er traumatische Erfahrungen gemacht, die er verarbeiten musste, in der Sprache mit ersten lyrischen Versuchen und in einem immer tiefer werdenden Glauben. "Religion zielt über die Widersprüche und Zufälligkeiten des Lebens hinaus auf eine fremde Mitte zu, wo jedes Bild, jeder Begriff, jeder Name verstummt". Christian Lehnert war einige Jahre als evangelischer Pfarrer tätig. Danach vier Jahre als Studienleiter an der Evangelischen Akademie in Wittenberg. Seit 2012 ist er Leiter des Liturgiewissenschaftlichen Instituts der Universität Leipzig. Seine Lyrik wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet, u.a. 2012 mit dem Hölty-Preis für Lyrik der Stadt Hannover, 2016 mit dem Eichendorff-Literaturpreis. Patrick Roth, 1953 in Freiburg im Breisgau geboren, wuchs in Karlsruhe auf. Er studierte in Freiburg Germanistik, Anglistik und Romanistik, in Los Angeles Film und Regie und entschloss sich danach, in den Vereinigten Staaten zu bleiben. Mitte der achtziger Jahre begann er, sich mit der Tiefenpsychologie von C.G. Jung zu beschäftigen und mit der Bibel. "Mit dieser Erfahrung, die man da macht, wird man sich eines zweiten Zentrums bewusst. Da ist etwas anderes, was anordnet, was einen in gewisser Weise in die Schule schickt." Patrick Roths Bücher , seine berühmt gewordenen "Christus-Trilogie" und der fulminante Roman "Sunrise. Das Buch Joseph" sind nicht nur von den Lesern, und dem Feuilleton als herausragend erkannt worden, sondern auch Bestandteil wissenschaftlicher Forschung verschiedenster Disziplinen. Patrick Roth erhielt viele wichtige Preise, u.a.1998 den Preis der Stiftung Bibel und Kultur der deutschen Bibelgesellschaft, 2003 den Literaturpreis der Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, 2006 den Mainzer Stadtschreiber-Preis. Es erscheint nur folgerichtig, diese beiden Autoren, die sich intensiv mit der Bibel beschäftigt und zutiefst existentielle Erfahrungen in ihren Büchern verarbeitet haben, in einem Band zu porträtieren.

Identities and social relations are fundamental elements of societies. To approach these topics from a new and different angle, this study takes the human body as the focal point of investigation. It tracks changing identities of early Iron Age people in central Europe through body-related practices: the treatment of the body after death and human representations in art. The human remains themselves provide information on biological parameters of life, such as sex, biological age, and health status. Objects associated with the body in the grave and funerary practices give further insights on how people of the early Iron Age understood life and death, themselves, and their place in the world. Representations of the human body appear in a variety of different materials, forms, and contexts, ranging from ceramic figurines to images on bronze buckets. Rather than focussing on their narrative content, human images are here interpreted as visualising and mediating identity. The analysis of how image elements were connected reveals networks of social relations that connect central Europe to the Mediterranean. Body ideals, nudity, sex and gender, aging, and many other aspects of women’s and men’s lives feature in this book. Archaeological evidence for marriage and motherhood, war, and everyday life is brought together to paint a vivid picture of the past.
