Dies interessiert, spätestens seitdem durch nationale und internationale Studien zur Leistungsfähigkeit des allgemeinen Schulwesens die angeblich geringe Leistungsfähigkeit unserer Schüler festgestellt wurde, sowohl die Öffentlichkeit als auch die Lehrerschaft. Die Schule muss Leistungsschule sein, da die Leistung in unserem menschlichen Alltag allgegenwärtig ist. Genau deswegen muss geklärt werden, welche pädagogischen Mittel angestrebt werden müssen, um schulische Leistungen richtig zu fördern. Leistungsbeurteilung und -messung wird erst dann sinnvoll, wenn ihre pädagogische Bedeutung klar und eindeutig betont wird. Dieser Aufgabe gerecht zu werden ist schwierig, denn die Leistungsbeurteilung der Schüler steht in einem Spannungsfeld zwischen der freien Entfaltung der Schülerpersönlichkeit einerseits und den Leistungsanforderungen der Gesellschaft andererseits. Deswegen ist sie, aber besonders die Zensurengebung, ein zentrales Thema der Schulpädagogik. Nirgendwo anders gehen die Meinungen und Aussagen der Forschung, der Öffentlichkeit, der Eltern und Schüler so weit auseinander und nirgends ist die Kritik so heftig wie bei diesem Thema. Wenn man die weitreichende Wirkung betrachtet, welche die schulische Leistungsbeurteilung für die Entwicklung und die Lebenschancen der einzelnen Schüler mit sich bringt, ist das auch nicht verwunderlich. Außerdem bietet nicht nur die Praxis der Leistungsbeurteilung Anlass zur Kritik, sondern auch deren Belastung mit objektiven Problemen. Der pädagogische Begriff der Leistung muss folglich die Individualität aller Kinder berücksichtigen und den gesellschaftlichen Funktionen nicht die Überhand gewinnen lassen. Vor allem das Fach Mathematik gilt heute neben dem Rechtschreiben als das Selektionsfach Nummer eins. Es besteht immer noch die fälschliche Meinung, dass sich die Lernerfolge objektiv beurteilen lassen, da es anscheinend nur richtige und falsche Antworten gibt. Aber auch in Mathematik existiert meist mehr als nur der einzig korrekte Lösungsweg. Die meisten Leistungsüberprüfungen konzentrieren sich auf den Wissens- oder Fertigkeitsbereich. So bedeutsam die Beherrschung von mathematischen Grundlagen auch ist, so wird ein Mathematikunterricht, welcher vor allem das automatische Abrufen von gespeicherten Wissenselementen und Handlungsweisen betont, der Prozesshaftigkeit des Faches bei weitem nicht gerecht. From the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, Liverpool was frequently referred to as the 'second city of the empire'. Yet, the role of Liverpool within the British imperial system and the impact on the city of its colonial connections remain underplayed in recent writing on both Liverpool and the empire. However, 'inconvenient' this may prove, this specially-commissioned collection of essays demonstrates that the imperial dimension deserves more prevalence in both academic and popular representations of Liverpool's past. Indeed, if Liverpool does represent the 'World in One City' - the slogan for Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture in 2008 - it could be argued that this is largely down to Merseyside's long-term interactions with the colonial world, and the legacies of that imperial history. The papers in this volume document about a decade of teaching experience in the fields of linguistics and foreign languages (German, English as a foreign language) in different cultures (Saudi Arabia, PR China, Morocco). There is no attempt to introduce yet another branch of modern linguistics. Rather, the old theme of the cultural embeddedness of verbal (and non-verbal) behavior is discussed from various perspectives. All papers are based on a large amount of authentic data of culture-specific and intercultural behavior, gathered by participant observation, interviews, tests etc. in the different settings over a long period of time. The main objective is to contribute to an extensional definition of «culture-contrastive linguistics» by a discussion of descriptive and didactic issues in an empirical fashion.
