Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2015 im Fachbereich Latinistik - Linguistik, Note: 1,0, Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Dass Quintilian in der Institutio oratoria mehr als Rhetorik vermitteln will, wird schon mit dem ersten Kapitel vom Buch I deutlich: Begonnen wird die Ausbildung der zukünftigen oratores nicht in der Jugend, wenn sich Tropen, Gestik und Mimik lehren lassen, sondern im frühen Kindesalter. Quintilian hat viel vor mit dem Redner und behandelt in den zwölf Büchern alles von der inventio bis zur moralischen Grundausbildung. Letztere steht spätestens in Buch XII so im Mittelpunkt, dass sich ein genauerer Blick auf Quintilians Rednerideal lohnt. Was ist der perfectus orator, den er immer wieder beschwört, und – vielleicht noch interessanter – wozu dient dieses schwerlich erreichbare Leitbild? Diese Arbeit versucht, Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden. Zunächst wird hierbei das Verhältnis von Philosophie und Rhetorik ausgelotet, da Quintilian mit vir bonus einen stark philosophisch konnotierten Begriff als Synonym zum perfectus orator verwendet. Des Weiteren gehen wir der Frage nach, welche Rolle die Natur, auf die Quintilian immer wieder verweist, im Leitbild des idealen Redners spielt. In den folgenden Abschnitten wird schließlich die Frage nach der Erreichbarkeit und nach dem Zweck des ambitionierten Programms Quintilians erörtert. Im Fazit wird sich zeigen, dass Philosophie und Rhetorik im perfectus orator zusammenwirken und dieser weit mehr ist als ein guter Redner. Die zahlreichen Erwähnungen bei nahezu jeder Gelegenheit deuten darauf hin, wie groß der Einfluss von Ciceros rhetorischen Schriften auf Quintilians eigene Arbeit gewesen ist. Aus Platzgründen kann hier jedoch keine detaillierte Gegenüberstellung der Rednerideale Ciceros und Quintilians erfolgen. So sei, abgesehen von einigen Verweisen im folgenden Text, auf Roblings ausführlichere Darstellung verwiesen.

Education and the conceptualization of technical disciplines are now focal points of research into Graeco-Roman antiquity, and Quintilian's work is central to both areas. Following the treatment of elementary education in Book 1, Quintilian proceeds to the discussion of the second stage of instruction, provided by the teacher of rhetoric. He gives important insights into the way teaching was conducted in a rhetorical school in Rome in the first century AD, and discusses the various elementary rhetorical exercises one by one. The second half of the book is concerned with Quintilian's theoretical conception of rhetoric. Rhetoric is seen as an 'art', a technical discipline grounded in rules and organized like medicine or seafaring, and - less obviously - as a virtue. The section as a whole provides an argument for Quintilian's celebrated claim that the perfect orator is 'a good man, skilled in speaking'.
