During the twentieth century, German government and industry created a highly skilled workforce as part of an ambitious program to control and develop the country’s human resources. Yet, these long-standing efforts to match as many workers as possible to skilled vocations and to establish a system of job training have received little scholarly attention, until now. The author’s account of the broad support for this program challenges the standard historical accounts that focus on disagreements over the German political-economic order and points instead to an important area of consensus. These advances are explained in terms of political policies of corporatist compromise and national security as well as industry’s evolving production strategies. By tracing the development of these policies over the course of a century, the author also suggests important continuities in Germany’s domestic politics, even across such different regimes as Imperial, Weimar, Nazi, and post-1945 West Germany.

Die vorliegenden Studien verfolgen den 'semantischen Umbau' der Sprachwissenschaft in Deutschland vom Krisendiskurs der Geisteswissenschaften in der Weimarer Republik bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges. Nach 1918 dominiert bei den deutschen Sprachwissenschaftlern eine hoch ambivalente Einstellung: Das stolze Bewußtsein, einer angesehenen und sehr 'deutschen' Wissenschaft anzugehören wechselt mit der Einsicht, daß die überkommenen Themen, Methoden und Begriffe des Faches keine Zukunft haben. Hinter den Formeln von 'Geist', 'Volk' und 'Ganzheit' sammeln sich die deutschen Sprachwissenschaftler, mit dem Ziel, nach dem politischen Machtverlust des Reiches wenigstens die 'geistige' Vorherrschaft Deutschlands wiederherzustellen und den französischen 'Positivismus' auszustechen. Um so größer sind die Erwartungen, welche das krisengebeutelte Fach in den nationalsozialistischen Staat investiert. Bereits in der Weimarer Republik beschleunigt sich jedoch die Engführung von Professionalisierung und Ideologisierung der Sprachwissenschaft. Diese Engführung vollzieht sich im Zeichen des 'Sprachkampfes' und der Sprachrechte der Grenz- und Auslandsdeutschen. So etabliert sich ein widersprüchlicher Komplex von fachlichen Themen und Deutungsmustern, der die deutsche Sprachwissenschaft weit über den Nationalsozialismus hinaus bis in die 1960er Jahre hinein prägt: im Zeichen von 'Muttersprache' und 'Sprachgemeinschaft'.
