Terrorism now dominates the headlines across the world-from New York to Kabul. Framing Terrorism argues that the headlines matter as much as the act, in political terms. Widely publicized terrorist incidents leave an imprint upon public opinion, muzzle the "watchdog" role of journalists and promote a general one-of-us consensus supporting security forces.

Liquid Reign is a work of speculative fiction, imagineering a fairly liveable future in 2051, neither dys- nor utopian.Melting the boundaries between science and fiction into a novel format, each chapter provides links to the sources of inspiration influencing it - ranging from Jean Jacques Rousseau's social contract of 1762 to blockchain startups from 2018."A vertiginous rollercoaster of ideas and a unique take on the future of (un)governance, delivered with irrepressible, unruly energy."- Jamie King of the Pirates, Host "Steal this Show""Tim Reutemann has become one of my favorite big brain boys over the past few months. In his book Liquid Reign he explores the future of democracy and civics in a way I have never seen done before... Communicating Terror: The Rhetorical Dimensions of Terrorism argues that the meaning of terrorism is socially constructed and suggests a new definition of terrorism, chiefly as a process of communication between terrorists and multiple target audiences. Concise yet comprehensive, this up-to-date text examines how acts of "terrorism" create rhetorical acts: What messages, persuasive meanings, symbols, do acts of terrorism generate and communicate to the world at large? These rhetorical components include definitions and labels, symbolism in terrorism, public oratory about terrorism, and the relationship between terror and media. This book examines diverse acts of terrorism, not just September 11th or recent events in the Middle East, to show the history and various effects of these acts as a medium for communication. This unique communication perspective shows how the rhetoric of terrorism is truly a war of words, symbols, and meanings.

Mass-Mediated Terrorism, Second Edition, an in-depth look at terrorism, political violence, and mass media, shows how terrorists exploit global media networks and information highways to carry news of their violence along with "propaganda of the deed." To what extent is the media advancing or obstructing the propaganda and policy goals of terrorists and their targets? Has the Internet strengthened the hands of terrorists to organize, recruit, and spread propaganda? How have targets of terrorism used the media to manipulate public opinion and advance their own agendas? From U.S. cases to incidents abroad, this award-winning book explores the use of political violence for the sake of publicity, media coverage of counterterrorism policies and its affect on political decision making, and the impact of new media. This revised second edition, which includes a new chapter on public opinion, is updated with analysis of the Iraq war, increasing terrorist attacks abroad, and subsequent counterterrorism measures. It also contains new information on the Arab satellite network Al-Jazeera and the use of the Internet in terrorist efforts. Mass-Mediated Terrorism offers a blueprint both for effective public information and media relations during terrorism crises as well as for ethical news coverage of major terrorism incidents.

The World Event/Interaction Survey (WEIS) Project is a research program examining international system characteristics and processes. Specifically, the data collected in the WEIS Project are public events reported daily in the press. The data reflect the flow of action and response between countries. One basic theoretical assumption underlying the project is that in the international political system, nations act consistently enough so that their past behavior is a source for the prediction of their present and future actions. Thus a country's external 'performance characteristics' in dealing with a wide variety of situations and with other countries are conceived to be made up of combinations of 'primary actions' that are categorized explicitly. These combinations of 'primary actions' are expected to fit together with those other countries in patterns of interaction. The purpose of the research is to discover if these theoretically expected characteristics and patterns make regular appearances in international relations. (Author) and patterns make regular appearances in international relations. (Author).

Written by and for men, the ultimate guide to becoming a strong male ally in the 21st century In just one generation, age-old ideas about women have been swept aside . . . but what does that have to do with men? Authors Michael Kaufman and Michael Kimmel, two of the world's leading male advocates of gender equality, believe it has everything to do with them -- and that it's crucial to educate men about feminism in order for them to fully understand just how important and positive these changes have been for them. Kaufman and Kimmel address these issues in The Guy's Guide to Feminism. Hip and accessible, it contains nearly a hundred entries -- from "Autonomy" to "Zero Tolerance" -- written in varying tones (humorous, satirical, irreverent, thoughtful, and serious) and in many forms ("top ten" lists, comics, interviews, mini-stories, and more). Each topic celebrates the ongoing gains that are improving the lives of women and girls -- and what that really means for men. Informal and fun yet substantive and intelligent, The Guy's Guide to Feminism illustrates how understanding and supporting feminism can help men live richer, fuller, and happier lives.
