Bei diesem 1970 erstmals erschienenen Buch handelt es sich (wie bei den im ça ira-Verlag neu aufgelegten Aufsätzen von Hans-Georg Backhaus zur Dialektik der Wertform) um einen Klassiker einer Marxinterpretation, die im Zuge des 1948 erstmals zugänglich gewordenen Rohentwurfs des Kapital (den Grundrissen) das in den stalinistischen (und sozialdemokratischen) Apologien des ›wissenschaftlichen Sozialismus‹ verlorengegangene kritische Potential der Marxschen Spätschriften reflektiert. Der Autor weist nach, daß, wenn man Marx um dessen philosophieimmanente Kritik verkürzt, ihn um seinen gesellschaftskritischen Stachel insgesamt bringt. Zentral ist dabei die Frage, wieviel die Marxschen Kategorien gerade im Kapital der Hegelschen Philosophie verdanken, insbesondere, was die Entstehung der bürgerlichen Subjektivität betrifft. Vor dem Hintergrund der kritischen Theorie Horkheimers und Adornos, diese allerdings um die Kategorien der Kritik der politischen Ökonomie erweiternd, wird gezeigt, daß gerade im Kapital, ganz im Gegensatz zu einer sich auf Marx berufenden positivistischen Sozialwissenschaft, Methode und Gegenstand, Form und Inhalt, Logik und Geschichte sich nicht unabhängig voneinander darstellen lassen, und daß sich deshalb die, etwa von Louis Althusser, behauptete Trennung des Marxschen Gesamtwerks in einen frühen spekulativ-dialektischen, und daher ›unwissenschaftlichen‹, und einen späten wissenschaftlichen nicht halten läßt. Die Neuauflage wurde vom Autor mit einem neuen Vorwort versehen.

In der Marx-Rezeption seit den 1960er Jahren entstanden erste Arbeiten einer gegenstands- und methodenkritischen Lektüre im Umkreis der Kritischen Theorie von Horkheimer und Adorno. Helmut Reichelts Zur logischen Struktur des Kapitalbegriffs bei Karl Marx (1968) wurde zu einem Klassiker dieser frühen Periode wertkritischer Schriften. In seinem 2008 erstmals erschienenen Buch treibt er diese noch weiter auf eine Auseinandersetzung mit Grundkategorien und Begrifflichkeiten der Sozialwissenschaft im weitesten Sinne – Struktur, Handlung, Subjektivität. Reichelts Neue Marx-Lektüre thematisiert wesentliche Erklärungsdefizite – wie die Begründung gesellschaftlicher Einheit und Allgemeinheit – in der Werttheorie von Marx, die dieser durch stillschweigende Einführung eines nicht weiter explizierten Geltungsbegriffs zu korrigieren sucht. Ein Konzept von Geltung, das sowohl Gegenständlichkeit und Addierbarkeit des Wertes als Voraussetzung makroökonomischer Analysen ermöglicht, ist bislang noch nie thematisiert, geschweige denn entwickelt worden. Zu Beginn werden die Einlösungsversuche eines solch anspruchsvollen gesellschaftskritischen Programms bei Adorno, Horkheimer und Sohn-Rethels Tauschabstraktion bilanziert. Im Anschluß an Überlegungen von Alfred Ammon, Georg Simmel und Hegel wird eine Lösung erarbeitet, die auch eine neue Form der Verknüpfung von Handlung und Struktur in der Sozialwissenschaft ermöglicht, an der auch neuere Versuche ökonomischer Kategorienentwicklung wie die von Gunnar Heinsohn/Otto Steiger bislang scheiterten. Im Resultat kommt Reichelt auf die dialektische Darstellung der Wert- und Kapitalformen bei Marx, die auf eine Erklärung der Verselbständigung von Struktur und Handlung in der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft zielt, und auf Adornos Reformulierung des Verhältnisses von Soziologie und Psychologie zurück sowie auf das Scheitern von Habermas’ Konzeptualisierung von System und Lebenswelt.
