Im Zuge von Weltgeschichtsschreibung, Transnationalisierungsforschung und "neuen" Area Studies ist die im deutschsprachigen Raum vertretene historische Teildisziplin Osteuropaische Geschichte zum einen unter Legitimationszwang geraten, zum anderen aber von eben diesen global orientierten Forschungsrichtungen als paradigmatischer Prototyp entdeckt worden. Im Kontext von Bezugsrahmen wie "Eurasien" und "zweiter Welt", ja selbst "Europa" oder "nordliche Hemisphare", ist das Erkenntnispotential der seit hundert Jahren gut etablierten historischen Osteuropaforschung samt ihren Foci auf Ostmitteleuropa, Sudosteuropa, Nordosteuropa und den ostslavischen Raum, aber auch auf den Kaukasus und Zentralasien sowie bezuglich der Verflechtung mit anderen Weltregionen, zum einen erkannt wie es zum anderen genutzt wird. Dies gilt nicht zuletzt fur die in der besagten Teildisziplin entwickelte Konzeption der Geschichtsregion, welche mittlerweile nicht nur von anderen Europahistorikern, sondern auch von Vertretern weiterer historischer Disziplinen - historische Soziologie, Zivilisationsgeschichtsschreibung, Kunstgeschichtsforschung, Literaturgeschichte, Anthropogeographie u. a. - kreativ adaptiert wird. Der Band belegt sowohl die Sinnhaftigkeit der geschichtsregionalen Konzeption "ostliches Europa" (samt ihren Untergliederungen) im intraregionalen Kontext als auch deren Konstituierung durch die Interaktion mit angrenzenden historischen Meso-Regionen.

Maria Todorova's book is devoted to the 'golden age' of the socialist idea, broadly surveying the period in and around the time of the Second International. It critically examines the promise for an alternative socialist utopia from 1870 to the 1920s. Todorova brings in the experience of the periphery in a comparative context in the belief that the margins can often elucidate better the character of a phenomenon, and de-provincialize it from essentialist notions. In doing so, The Lost World of Socialists at Europe's Margins moves beyond the traditional historiographical emphasis on ideology by looking at different intersections or entanglements of spaces, generations, genders, ideas and feelings, and different flows of historical time. The study provides a social and cultural history of early socialism in Eastern Europe with an emphasis on Bulgaria, arguably the country with the earliest and strongest socialist movement in Southeast Europe, and one that had a unique relationship to both German and Russian social democracy. Based on a rich prosopographical database of around 3500 biographies of people born in the 19th century, the book addresses the interplay of several generations of leftists, looking at the specifics of how ideas were generated, received, transferred and transformed. Finally, the work investigates the intersection between subjectivity and memory as reflected in a unique cache of archival materials containing over 4000 documentary sources including diaries, oral interviews, and unpublished memoirs. A microhistorical approach to this material allows the reconstruction of 'structures of feeling' that inspired an exceptional group of individuals.

The history of Europe as a continent of refugees European history has been permeated with refugees. The Outsiders chronicles every major refugee movement since 1492, when the Catholic rulers of Spain set in motion the first mass flight and expulsion in modern European history. Philipp Ther provides needed perspective on today’s “refugee crisis,” demonstrating how Europe has taken in far greater numbers of refugees in earlier periods of its history, in wartime as well as peacetime. His sweeping narrative crosses the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, taking readers from the Middle East to the shores of America. In this compelling book, Ther examines the major causes of mass flight, from religious intolerance and ethnic cleansing to political persecution and war. He describes the perils and traumas of flight and explains why refugees and asylum seekers have been welcomed in some periods—such as during the Cold War—and why they are rejected in times such as our own. He also examines the afterlives of the refugees in the receiving countries, which almost always benefited from admitting them. Based on extensive original research at the local level, this book explores the relationship between Russian Orthodoxy and politics in contemporary Russia. Im Kuttenberger Dekret verlieh König Wenzel IV. entgegen der Prager Universitätsverfassung den drei deutschsprachigen Universitätsnationen nurmehr eine Stimme in der Universitätsversammlung, der böhmischen Nation dagegen drei. Die nationale Geschichtsschreibung hat daher seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts dieses Dekret zu einem Höhepunkt ständiger Spannungen zwischen Deutschen und Böhmen stilisiert, auf den sie die deutsch-tschechischen Gegensätze des 19./20. Jahrhunderts zurückprojizieren konnte. In seiner Analyse weist der Autor dagegen nach, dass die Beziehung der Prager Universitätsnationen bis Anfang des 15. Jahrhunderts vom Bemühen um Eintracht geprägt war. Zudem behandelt er die Ursachen und Folgen des Dekrets sowie das allmähliche Eindringen nationaler Aspekte in die philosophisch-theologischen Konflikte zwischen der Kirchenreformpartei und ihren Gegnern an der Universität. Der Autor kommt u. a. zu dem Schluss, dass das Dekret die böhmischen Magister nur vordergründig zu Siegern machte, in Wirklichkeit aber zum Niedergang der Prager Universität führte sowie zum Gelingen der Leipziger Neugründung, für die dieses Buch ebenfalls interessante Aufschlüsse bietet.
