Das Nachdenken über Formen der Erzählung hat eine lange Tradition, doch in der Selbstwahrnehmung der modernen Narratologie spielten diese theoriegeschichtlichen Wurzeln bisher keine große Rolle. Die Arbeit widmet sich diesem vergessenen Teil der Theoriegeschichte. Im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stehen dabei die Romanstudien Otto Ludwigs, die ein herausragendes Zeugnis der begrifflichen Komplexität erzähltheoretischen Denkens vor 1900 darstellen. Auf Grundlage eines Überblicks über die theoriegeschichtliche Entwicklung seit dem späten 18. Jahrhundert wird aufgezeigt, worin das Innovative in Ludwigs Beschäftigung mit der Erzählform zu sehen ist und inwiefern darin das allgemeine Literatur- und Wirklichkeitsverständnis des Autors zum Ausdruck kommt. Theoretische Texte unter anderem von Friedrich Spielhagen, Berthold Auerbach und Theodor Fontane werden vergleichend herangezogen, um Ludwigs Auffassungen im poetologischen Diskurs des 19. Jahrhunderts zu verorten. Auf diese Weise beleuchtet die Arbeit nicht nur ein weitgehend vergessenes Kapitel in der Geschichte der Erzähltheorie, sondern leistet auch einen Beitrag zur kritischen Neubewertung der Poetik des literarischen Realismus.
