Die vorliegende Studie will zum Verstandnis des Zeitgeschehens im Nahen Osten und zur gegenwartsbezogenen Orientforschung beitragen. Sie schlieBt an das Buch des Verfassers {raquo}Patriarchen am Goldenen Horn{laquo} an. Dieses Buch ist 1967 abgeschlossen worden. Es erschien geboten, die Darstellung weiterzufiihren und in mancher Hinsicht zu erganzen, nachdem die politischen Krisen im ostlichen Mittelmeerraum die Ortho doxe Kirche vor neue Probleme und Schwierigkeiten gestellt haben. 1m Mittelpunkt der Darstellung steht wiederum das Okumenische Patriarch at von Konstantinopel. Die lange Ara drs groBen Patriarchen Athenagoras r. ist in der Be richtszeit zu Ende gegangen. Dem Wechsel auf dem okumenischen Thron und des sen Folgen ist daher breiter Raum gewidmet. Ausfiihrlich werden alsdann die Vorgange in den Kirchen von Griechenland, Zypern und Antiochia sowie die Aktivitat des Moskauer Patriarchats im Nahen Osten hehandelt. Hinweise auf die Entwicklung in den orthodoxen Patriarchaten von Alexandria und Jerusalem sind an verschiedenen Stell en eingeflochten, so daB der Verfasser hoffen darf, ein einigermaBen abgerundetes Bild orthodoxer Kirchenpolitik in der Region gegeben zu haben. Was auBerhalb des ostlichen Mittelmeerraumes und des angrenzenden Vorderen Orients liegt, ist nur inso weit beriicksichtigt, als es zu den regional en Problemen Bezug hat und zu deren Ver standnis herangezogen werden muB. Zeitlich schlieBt die Darstellung mit dem Stand yom Juli 1975 abo Fiihrend innerhalb der aus einer Mehrzahl dogma tisch geeinter, aber administrativ unabhangiger (autokephaler) Gliedkirchen bestehenden orthodoxen Glaubensgemein schafl: sind die Patriarchate von Konstantinopel und Moskau.

Western European Christendom finds it difficult to comprehend the Eastern Orthodox Church because it knows little about the practice and doctrines of Orthodoxy. Even what is known is overlaid by many strata of prejudices and misunderstandings, partly political in nature. One of the obstacles has been the natural tendency to confound the ideas and customs of the Orthodox Church with familiar parallels in Roman Catholicism. To escape this tradition pitfall, Ernst Benz focuses on icon painting as a logical place to begin his examination of the Orthodox Church. Beginning with a brilliant discussion of the importance of icons in the Eastern Church--and the far-reaching effects of icons on doctrine as well as art--Benz counteracts the confusion, explaining simply and clearly the liturgy and sacraments, dogma, constitution and law of Eastern Orthodoxy. In brief history, he describes the rise of Orthodox national churches, schismatic churches, and churches in exile; the role of monasticism and its striking differences from Roman Catholic monasticism; the missionary work of the Orthodox Church; and the influence of Orthodoxy on politics and culture. The role of the church can be defined in terms of the image. Benz writes that the church exists so that "members may be incorporated into the image of Jesus Christ a in that individual believers are aechanged into his likeness'" as Paul writes in the second letter to the Corinthians.
