Die vorliegende Arbeit möchte die Philosophie Th. W. Adornos für das theologische Denken fruchtbar machen. Der erste Teil stellt eine Rekonstruktion der Philosophie Adornos als Auseinandersetzung mit den Widersprüchen der Moderne dar. Der Darstellung entspringt die Problemformulierung des theologischen Teils. Für die Theologie ergibt sich die Frage, ob sie - als Offenbarungstheologie - ihre Inhalte nur subjekt- und vernunftfeindlich oktroyieren kann und damit selbst ein Stück prolongierter Mythos ist, oder ob sie, der Empfehlung Adornos folgend, unter einem erweiterten Bilderverbot verstummen soll. Beide Alternativen bedeuten die Auflösung der Offenbarungstheologie. Der zweite Teil wird auf der Basis der Untersuchungen zur Philosophie Adornos die Möglichkeitsbedingungen theologischer Rede in formaler und materialer Hinsicht überprüfen. Indem die Philosophie Adornos und die neueren theologischen Diskurse in wechselnde Versuchsanordnungen gebracht werden, kann es gelingen, Anstöße für eine kritische Fundamentaltheologie zu gewinnen, gleichsam als Antwort auf die Widersprüche der Moderne und die Kritik Adornos.

Für die Kritische Theorie Max Horkheimers war das Judentum als Erfahrung und Idee grundlegend. Max Horkheimer (1895-1973) gilt als Spiritus Rector der Kritischen Theorie der ersten Generation; jenes Denkens, das die intellektuelle Bundesrepublik maßgeblich geprägt hat. Was in der deutschen Wahrnehmung und Rezeption jedoch vielfach unbelichtet blieb, war das Judentum, das sich als Erfahrung und als Idee insbesondere im Spätwerk und den privateren Notizen Horkheimers artikulierte. Die Tatsache, dass die Kritische Theorie Horkheimers auch Jüdische Philosophie, bzw. Jüdisches Denken ist und dass das "Bilderverbot" ein zentraler Bezug war, arbeitet Yael Kupferberg heraus: An diesem Verbot entwickelte Horkheimer seinen Begriff vom Judentum und verband es in dessen Bruch mit antisemitismustheoretischen Reflexionen, die in der Antisemitismusforschung bislang wenig Beachtung fanden.
