Statt dessen ist die Annahme eines „ethnisch homogenen Deutschlands“1 während des Kaiserreichs weit verbreitet. Die Spuren der polnischen Migranten und ihres Lebens sind heute kaum mehr sichtbar. Deshalb auf einen erfolgreichen Integrationsprozess zu schließen, ist allerdings nicht angebracht. Vielmehr wurde die polnische Minderheit und ihre mit der Zeit entstehenden Organisationen beobachtet und sogar bekämpft. Die Gründe für die Unterdrückung lagen größtenteils außerhalb des Ruhrgebiets, nämlich in den Ostprovinzen2. Die Methoden und Maßnahmen im Westen reflektierten die Germanisierungspolitik der Administration im Osten. Polen sahen sich aufgrund ihrer Herkunft dem Generalverdacht ausgesetzt, die kaiserliche Nation zu gefährden. In dieser Hausarbeit wird der Entwicklungsweg der Polen im Ruhrgebiet nachvollzogen und Faktoren ihrer (Nicht-) Integration aufgezeigt. Zunächst werden in Teil 2 die Gründe der Migration behandelt, die primär in der Überbevölkerung in den Ostprovinzen und der Anziehungskraft der Industrialisierung im Ruhrgebiet lagen. Die Lebensbedingungen der Polen im Ruhrgebiet werden ebenso dargestellt. Teil 3 zeigt die generelle Linie der Polenpolitik im Deutschen Kaiserreich. Sie war in den Ostprovinzen durch die konsequente Germanisierungspolitik der Regierung gekennzeichnet, um polnische Bestrebungen nach einer eigenen Nation zu verhindern. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit fand die Bekämpfung der polnischen Sprache als einigender Ausdruck der Kultur. Auch im Ruhrgebiet wurde das Polnische von den Deutschen nicht akzeptiert und bekämpft, deutsche Verordnungen wurden beispielsweise nicht übersetzt und öffentliche polnischsprachige Versammlungen verboten. Um grundlegende Bedürfnisse, zum Beispiel nach Seelsorge und Gemeinschaft, zu erfüllen, gründeten die Polen eigene Vereine, Medien und eine Gewerkschaft. Die polnischen Organisationen fanden starken Zuspruch bei den Zugewanderten. Sie gerieten aber durch die Verbote und die politische Entwicklung vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg zusehends unter Druck. Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is one of the best-known and most enduring texts of classical sociology, continually inspirational and widely read by both scholars and students. Why do some migrants integrate quickly, while others become long-term minorities? What is the role of the state in the settlement process? To what extent are experiences in the past different from the present? Are the recent migrants really integrating in another way than those in the past? Is Islam indeed an obstacle to integration? These are some of the burning questions, which dominate the current politicized debate on immigration in Western Europe. In this book, leading historians and social scientists analyze and compare a variety of settlement processes in past and present migration to Western Europe. Identifying general factors in the process of adaptation of new immigrants, the contributors trace social changes effected by recent European immigration, and the parallels with the great American migration of the 1880s-1920s. The history of migration to Western Europe and the way these migrants found their place in the receiving societies, is not only essential to understand the way nations deal with newcomers in the present, but also constitutes a highly interesting laboratory for different paths of integration now and then. By analyzing and comparing a wealth of settlement processes both in the past and in the present this book is both a bold interdisciplinary endeavor, and at the same time the first attempt to identify general factors underlying the way migrants adapt to their new surroundings, as well as how societies change under the influence of immigration. The chapters in the book both look at specific groups in various periods, but also analyses the structure of the state, churches unions and other important organized actors in Western European nation states. Moreover, the results are embedded in the more theoretical American literature on the comparison of old and new migrants. Edmund Husserl, generally regarded as the founding figure of phenomenology, exerted an enormous influence on the course of twentieth and twenty-first century philosophy. This volume collects and translates essays written by important German-speaking commentators on Husserl, ranging from his contemporaries to scholars of today, to make available in English some of the best commentary on Husserl and the phenomenological project. The essays focus on three problematics within phenomenology: the nature and method of phenomenology; intentionality, with its attendant issues of temporality and subjectivity; and intersubjectivity and culture. Several essays also deal with Martin Heidegger’s phenomenology, although in a manner that reveals not only Heidegger’s differences with Husserl but also his reliance on and indebtedness to Husserl’s phenomenology. Taken together, the book shows the continuing influence of Husserl’s thought, demonstrating how such subsequent developments as existentialism, hermeneutics, and deconstruction were defined in part by how they assimilated and departed from Husserlian insights. The course of what has come to be called continental philosophy cannot be described without reference to this assimilation and departure, and among the many successor approaches phenomenology remains a viable avenue for contemporary thought.
