Frühjahr und Sommer 1919: In ihrem Versteck in einem niedersächsischen Dorf schreibt die zweiundzwanzigjährige Charlotte Kornfeld das gerade zuvor Erlebte nieder: Erinnerungen an die Novemberrevolution 1918, an die Ereignisse in der Hansestadt Bremen, in deren Folge das alte Gemeinwesen in eine Räterepublik umgewandelt wurde, die erste auf deutschem Boden, sowie an die Belagerung und Eroberung Bremens durch konterrevolutionäre Truppen (die in den Kämpfen erstmals das Hakenkreuz am Stahlhelm zeigten). Früh in Berlin in den Umkreis August Bebels aufgenommen, hatte die Schreiberin der Sozialdemokratie bereits fünfzehnjährig als Kurierin gedient. Während einer ihrer Missionen lernte sie im Sommer 1912 in Bremen den Parteijournalisten Johann Knief kennen, der sich zum bedeutendsten Kopf der Bremer Linksradikalen entwickelte. Dieser engagiert sie im Januar 1917 als Geschäftsführerin eines von ihm neu gegründeten publizistischen Organs. Zum selben Zeitpunkt wird sie seine Lebensgefährtin. Die politische Situation zwingt die beiden zum Untertauchen im Reichsgebiet, u. a. in Bayern. Anfang 1918 verhaftet, erleben sie das letzte Jahr des Kaiserreichs getrennt in Gefangenschaft, bis der 9. November sie befreit. Zwei Monate bleiben ihnen noch, um beim Aufbau des Neuen wichtige Aufgaben zu übernehmen, in Bremen und Berlin. Am 9. Januar 1919 wird Knief, durch die Strapazen der Vergangenheit geschwächt, in die Klinik eingeliefert. Er muß sich mehreren Operationen unterziehen. Bei anschließenden Versuchen, sich zu erholen, unterstützt ihn Charlotte, die sich als umsichtige Pflegerin erweist. Am 10. Januar wird Bremen Räterepublik. Knief, der eigentliche Motor der Bewegung in der Hansestadt, kann die Vorgänge nur vom Krankenbett aus beobachten. Eine anscheinende Besserung ermöglicht ihm und Charlotte einen längeren - so glücklichen wie problematischen - Aufenthalt bei dem Maler Heinrich Vogeler auf dessen Barkenhoff in Worpswede. Am Ende muß Knief sich erneut in die Klinik begeben, wo er am 6. April 1919 stirbt. Am 7. April entsteht die Räterepublik Bayern.

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) lies at the heart of global, regional and national policy agendas, with the goal of achieving socially and environmentally just development through the provision of inclusive, equitable quality education for all. Realising this potential on the African continent, however, calls for radical transformation of policy and practice. Developing a transformative agenda requires taking account of the ‘learning crisis’ in schools, the inequitable access to a good quality education, the historical role of education and training in supporting unsustainable development, and the enormous challenges involved in complex system change. In the African continent, sustainable development entails eradicating poverty and inequality, supporting economically sustainable livelihoods within planetary boundaries, and averting environmental catastrophe, as well as dealing with health pandemics and security threats. In addressing these challenges, the book: explores the meaning of ESD for Africa in the context of the ‘postcolonial condition’ critically discusses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as regional development agendas draws on a wealth of research evidence and examples from across the continent engages with contemporary debates about the skills, competencies and capabilities required for sustainable development, including decolonising the curriculum and transforming teaching and learning relationships sets out a transformative agenda for policy-makers, practitioners, NGOs, social movements and other stakeholders based on principles of social and environmental justice.
