Die Meiji-Zeit (1868-1912) stellt in der Geschichte Japans und der japanischen Sprache ein besonderes Kapitel dar, war sie doch geprägt von einem Streben nach nationaler Einheit und Identität, ausgelöst durch den Fall des Tokugawa-Shogunats, die Öffnung des Landes zum Westen und die darauffolgende plötzliche und intensive Konfrontation mit den westlichen Mächten, gegen die sich Japan über zweihundert Jahre lang fast gänzlich abgeschottet hatte. Westliche Einflüsse hatten aber nicht nur Auswirkungen auf Gesellschaft und Wissenschaft, sondern haben die japanische Sprache zu dieser Zeit erheblich geprägt. Wie jede andere natürliche Sprache ist auch die japanische zu jeder Zeit Einflüssen ausgesetzt, die Veränderungen etwa in Grammatik, Vokabular oder Aussprache verursachen, doch ist der Wandel der Meiji-Zeit insofern von besonderer Bedeutung, als er sehr bewusst erlebt wurde und äußerst rapide von statten ging.
