Civil Rights And The Idea Of Freedom written by Richard H. King and has been published by University of Georgia Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1996 with Political Science categories.

Civil Rights and the Idea of Freedom is a groundbreaking work, one of the first to show in detail how the civil rights movement crystallized our views of citizenship as a grassroots-level, collective endeavor and of self-respect as a formidable political tool. Drawing on both oral and written sources, Richard H. King shows how rank-and-file movement participants defined and discussed such concepts as rights, equality, justice, and, in particular, freedom, and how such key movement leaders as Martin Luther King Jr., Ella Baker, Stokely Carmichael, and James Forman were attuned to this "freedom talk." The book includes chapters on the concept of freedom in its many varieties, both individual and collective; on self-interest and self-respect; on Martin Luther King's use of the idea of freedom; and on the intellectual evolution of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, especially in light of Frantz Fanon's thought among movement radicals. In demonstrating that self-respect, self-determination, and solidarity were as central to the goals of the movement as the dismantling of the Jim Crow system, King argues that the movement's success should not be measured in terms of tangible, quantifiable advances alone, such as voter registration increases or improved standards of living. Not only has the civil rights movement helped strengthen the meaning and political importance of active citizenship in the contemporary world, says King, but "what was at first a political goal became, in the 1970s and 1980s, the impetus for the academic and intellectual rediscovery and reinterpretation of the Afro-American cultural and historical experience."

Reporting The Wars written by Joseph James Mathews and has been published by U of Minnesota Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1957-01-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Reporting the Wars was first published in 1957. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. News of the wars has always intrigued the public, from the time of the Napoleonic wars up to the present. In this period of the last century and a half, however, the character both of the public and of the news has changed. Mr. Mathews traces the history of war news coverage from John Bell, who, in 1794, was probably the first war correspondent, to Ernie Pyle of World War II fame. The account is colorful, since war correspondents are notably adventurous individuals, and it is significant for a basic understanding of history, since the reporting of war news has represented a constant struggle against the forces of censorship and propaganda. The book is illustrated with newspaper cartoons.

You Have Words Of Eternal Life written by Hans Urs Von Balthasar and has been published by Ignatius Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-09 with Religion categories.

The highly-respected Swiss theologian provides short, profound meditations on numerous scriptural passages throughout the New Testament. The simplicity and wisdom of these meditations demonstrates that, although he was a great theologian, von Balthasar was deeply interested in sustaining the spiritual lives of modern men and women in this difficult time of the Church. "These beautiful meditations of Fr. von Balthasar are a wonderful testament to his spirit-a spirit of great love of the Lord and his Church, and a spirit of the deepest wisdom and discernment for our times. Turn wherever you like in these pages and I believe you will find the spiritual nourishment which our souls need so much today. People cry out for the authentic food which can only come from inspired and prayerful pondering on the living message of Jesus. In You Have Words of Eternal Life there is such good food in plenty." - Sister Briege McKenna, O.S.C., Author, Miracles Do Happen "An outstanding example of Biblical theology that is both useful for the laity and faithful to the Church. It shows that something rich and true lies between scripture scholarship and systematic theology." - Professor Scott Hahn, University of Steubenville "These New Testament meditations are vintage von Balthasar, but more readily, more easily grasped by non-theologians. He brings to his scriptural commentary a fresh depth of insight that most biblical technicians simply do not have." - Fr. Thomas Dubay, Author, Fire Within

The concept of "Web 2.0" began with a conference brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. Dale Dougherty, web pioneer and O'Reilly VP, noted that far from having "crashed", the web was more important than ever, with exciting new applications and sites popping up with surprising regularity. What's more, the companies that had survived the collapse seemed to have some things in common. Could it be that the dot-com collapse marked some kind of turning point for the web, such that a call to action such as "Web 2.0" might make sense? We agreed that it did, and so the Web 2.0 Conference was born. In the year and a half since, the term "Web 2.0" has clearly taken hold, with more than 9.5 million citations in Google. But there's still a huge amount of disagreement about just what Web 2.0 means, with some people decrying it as a meaningless marketing buzzword, and others accepting it as the new conventional wisdom. This article is an attempt to clarify just what we mean by Web 2.0.

Feminist Thought written by Rosemarie Putnam Tong and has been published by Westview Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-02-27 with Philosophy categories.

In this second edition of her 1989 survey on feminist theory, Rosemarie Tong provides a more comprehensive and substantially redrawn map of twentieth-century feminist thinking. Besides providing up-to-date coverage of liberal, radical (libertarian and cultural), and Marxist-socialist schools of feminism, she covers psychoanalytic, existentialist, and postmodern feminism. All the chapters have been rethought and new chapters on ecofeminism and multicultural and global feminism have been added. In the clear-sighted and accessible style for which has become known, Tong guides the reader through the complexities of even the most notoriously difficult thinkers. Students will become familiar with many of the essential figures in the feminist tradition as well as some of the issues that have been of special concern to women (e.g., pornography, reproductive technology, housework, the environment, and militarism). Moreover, students are repeatedly urged to consider the many differences that separate women (class, race, ethnicity, age, nationality, religion) as well as the sameness that continue to unite women.Tong treats all views with respect and encourages the reader to think both sympathetically and critically about what feminism is and what relevance it has to their own lives. As valuable as the first edition of Feminist Thought, this second edition surpasses its predecessor in depth and breadth. Clearly, Tong believes that feminist thought is still developing even as it approaches the millennium.
