As a youngster in 1912, Toby Edgeworth first visited Paris. His holiday ended far too soon, but Toby vowed to return. He fulfilled his promise in 1923 and stayed a lifetime. In this fictional memoir, journalist James Brogan is assigned to discover what became of Toby, a fellow journalist, who once wrote a column for the same British daily for which James now works. Toby's columns presented vivid images of what occupied the attentions and possessed the imaginations of Parisians between World Wars I and II. Surprised to find Toby still alive, James develops a close friendship with him. Beyond penning just a single newspaper profile, Toby asks James to chronicle his life story, including detailed reminisces of Paris when she was alive with the littérateur and bon viveur. Over their six-year relationship, Brogan listens to Toby's recollections and lyrically illustrates one of the most glamorous periods in Paris history. La Vie de Paris captures Toby's joys of living, from promenading the Grande Boulevards to observing the kaleidoscope of people from café terraces. Through Toby's story, you'll delight in everything from a restful morning in Luxembourg Gardens to a glimpse of nightlife on the fairyland-like tableau of the Champs Elysee.

Singer. Dancer. Movie star. Activist. Queer icon. Afrofuturist. Working class heroine. Time traveler. Prophet. Feminist. Android. Dirty Computer. Janelle Monáe is all these things and more, making her one of the most fascinating artists to emerge in the twenty-first century. This provocative new study explores how Monáe’s work has connected different media platforms to strengthen and enhance new movements in art, theory, and politics. It considers not only Monáe’s groundbreaking albums The ArchAndroid, The Electric Lady, and Dirty Computer, but also Monáe’s work as an actress in such films as Hidden Figures and Antebellum, as well as her soundtrack appearances in socially-engaged projects ranging from I May Destroy You to Us. Examining Monáe as a cultural icon whose work is profoundly intersectional, this book maps how she is actively reshaping discourses around race, gender, sexuality, and capitalism. Tracing Monáe’s performances of joy, desire, pain, and hope across a wide range of media forms, it shows how she imagines Afrofuturist, posthumanist, and postcapitalist utopias, while remaining grounded in the realities of being a Black woman in a white-dominated industry. This is an exciting introduction to an audacious innovator whose work offers us fresh ways to talk about identity, desire, and power.

While uses and studies of XR technology within STEM-based education have been plentiful in recent years, there has been lesser or even, at times, a lack of coverage for this novel learning tool in the arts and humanities.Past and Future Presence aims to bridge some of that gap by presenting research-based theory and case studies of successful application and implementation of XR technology into postsecondary educational settings, ranging in topics from ancient to modern languages, classical and contemporary art, and reenvisioned historical scenes and events presented in ways never seen before. The studies also contemplate how this novel medium can enhance and supplement learning in classrooms and other formal or informal learning environments. The volume as a whole is intended to demonstrate to educators, scholars, and researchers in higher education the potential value of integrating XR technology into their classrooms and to provide a strong argument for college and university administrators to invest in training and development of new research and content for classrooms inside and outside of STEM. The authors of these chapters come from a diverse range of backgrounds at different stages of their careers, providing a broad crosssection of scholastic work within the humanities and arts. Each chapter offers a different angle or approach to incorporating XR technology into teaching or research within different subject areas. As the volume suggests, this technology also places additional emphasis on the humanity within the humanities, by focusing on increasing connection between users and different cultures, time periods, and perspectives.

Beginning with Sir Michael Palliser in 1985 and concluding with Secretary General of NATO Manfred Worner in 1992, the distinguished Spaak Lectures included in this volume have addressed the fundamental questions of international politics: What is the nature of national power and influence and what are the limitations on American influence in particular? What role can Europe play in a world of changing power relationships? How will Europe react to the political, economic, social, and security challenges that have been thrust upon it in recent times? How much should Europe and the United States seek to integrate and contain Germany? Other contributors include Karl Otto Pohl, Filipe Gonzalez, Raymond Barre, Frans Andriessen, and Jiri Dienstbier. Supplemented with an introductory chapter by Richard C. Eichenberg and the transcript of the Spaak Conference held in Brussels in October 1991, this book will enrich scholars or indeed anyone seeking a deeper understanding of U.S.-European relations. Co-published with the Center for International Affairs, Harvard University.

Contested Representations written by Shelly R. Butler and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-05 with Social Science categories.

The controversy surrounding the significant "Into the Heart of Africa" exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada is explored in this compelling and analytical text. The exhibit has become an international, controversial touchstone for issues surrounding the politics of visual representation, such as the challenges to curatorial and ethnographic authority in multicultural and postcolonial contexts. Asking why the museum's exhibit failed so many people, the author examines such issues as institutional politics, the broad political and intellectual climate surrounding museums, the legacies of colonialism and traditions of representation of Africa, and the politics of irony. By drawing upon anthropological and cultural criticism, the book offers a unique account of the ways in which an ambiguous exhibit about colonialism became the site of an expansiveInto the Heart of Africa."
