Summary : The first swept-wing carrier-based fighter aircraft built for the US Navy, the F9F Cougar, marked a major leap forward in naval aircraft design from its predecessor, the straight-wing Grumman F9F Panther. The prototype of the first version of the Cougar, the F9F-6, first took to the air in September 1951, just six months after contract award. There were several different models of the Cougar, reflecting its varied uses as well as the general development of the aircraft. The F9F-6 was followed by the F9F-7 and F9F-8. In addition, there were also two reconnaissance models, F9F-6P and F9F-8P, as well as a two-seater trainer version, F9F-8T. The contemporary photographs in this volume illustrate in detail the differences between the various Cougar models, making use of more than a dozen display aircraft located in museums across the US as well as one Cougar on display in Argentina. Grounded in solid historical research, the book also features historical images from the photo archives of both the US Navy and Grumman, and also includes rare photos of F9F Cougar in its final days, serving as a target drone for later generations of fighters.

Summary : The contract for the new Grumman Cougar (G-93) was signed on March 2, 1951. The first flight of the XF9F-6 Cougar was on September 20, 1951. When Grumman and the Navy first discussed the Panther, both parties were privy to the Navy Technical Team findings in German WW-II research immediately after the war and the fact that many of the top German fighter designers had "migrated" to our new enemy, Russia. This information put firm emphasis on the greater critical Mach number with the swept wing over a convention straight-wing fighter for both the U.S. and the USSR.

Summary : In 1948 the USAF, Marine Corps and US Navy were concentrating on converting over to an all-jet force. When the Korean War started in June 1950, the USAF had built up a sizable jet force in the Far East, while the US Navy was in the early stages of getting F9F Panthers operational as replacements for its piston-engined F8F Bearcats. At about this time, the Marine Corps had also begun using the Panthers in limited numbers. Operating from aircraft carriers off the Korean coast, F9Fs helped stop the North Korean invasion within two weeks of the communists crossing the 38th Parallel. The Panthers, escorting carrier-based AD Skyraiders and F4U Corsairs, penetrated as far north as Pyongyang, where they bombed and strafed targets that the North Koreans thought were out of range. The Panthers also took the battle all the way to the Yalu River, long before the MiG-15s became a threat. The F9F's basic tasking was aerial supremacy and combat air patrols, but they also excelled in bombing and strafing attacks.
