FJ Fury in Detail & Scale, Part 2: FJ-4 and FJ-4B Variants completes Detail & Scale’s two-book treatment of North American’s iconic early jet fighter flown by the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps. These were the ultimate variants of the Fury resulting from a second extensive redesign of the aircraft that first bore the name. In 2003, Detail & Scale originally published FJ Fury in Detail & Scale. That title covered all versions of the Fury, including the FJ-4 and FJ-4B. In mid-2021, we published FJ Fury in Detail & Scale, Part 1: Prototypes Through FJ-3 Variants. The FJ Fury was a major milestone as the Navy developed its early jet fighters for carrier operations. Moving from the original straight-wing design of the FJ-1, the FJ-2 would become operational with the Marines, and the FJ-3 would become one of the first swept-wing jet fighters to operate successfully from aircraft carriers of the U. S. Navy in large numbers, along with Grumman’s F9F Cougar. It was an essential step along the way that led to the state-of-the-art supersonic fighters that followed. This publication, FJ Fury in Detail & Scale, Part 2: FJ-4 and FJ-4B Variants, continues our coverage with a detailed look at the last two Fury variants which incorporated major design changes over the previous versions. The FJ-4 served primarily with the Marines as a day fighter, while the FJ-4B was modified to become an effective ground attack aircraft that was assigned to attack squadrons with both the Navy and the Marines. Together, these two books provide the most extensive and detailed look at the Fury series of jet fighters ever published. The first chapter begins with a brief summary of the development of the early Fury variants covered in Part 1, then moves on to outlining the major redesign that resulted in the FJ-4 and FJ-4B. This is followed by the Fury Variants chapter which takes a closer look at the FJ-4 and FJ-4B in separate sections, each discussing their features, capabilities, and their service with both the Navy and Marines. Special emphasis is placed on explaining how the FJ-4 was modified to become the FJ-4B and serve as an effective fighter-bomber with far greater capabilities than the FJ-4 in employing ground attack ordnance including both conventional and nuclear weapons as well as the Sidewinder air-to-air and Bullpup air-to-surface guided missiles. This allowed the FJ-4B to serve as a carrier-based jet attack aircraft as the Navy waited for the development and introduction into service of its first purpose designed jet powered light attack aircraft in the form of the Douglas A4D Skyhawk. Photographs and art profiles illustrate the markings used by many of the squadrons that operated each variant. The experimental FJ-4F is also covered in a separate section. The Fury Details chapter is next, and this hallmark of the Detail & Scale Series of publications covers the physical details and features of the FJ-4 and FJ-4B extensively with more than 120 photographs and illustrations that are divided into eight different sections. More than ninety percent of the photographs in the chapter were taken specifically for this publication and the overwhelming majority are in color. Concluding the book is our usual Modelers Section that includes extensive and objective reviews of the scale model kits of FJ-4s and FJ-4Bs ranging from 1/144th scale to 1/32nd scale. General and detail photographs and a comprehensive text provide the scale modeler with valuable information about building and correcting the existing kits to produce the most accurate scale models of these two Fury variants. The digital version of FJ Fury in Detail & Scale, Part 2: FJ-4 and FJ-4B Variants has 147 pages, 207 photographs (144 in color), and 11 full color profiles and a dozen other illustrations.

FJ Fury in Detail & Scale, Part 1: Prototypes Through FJ-3 Variants is the first of two books that cover North American Aviation’s iconic early jet fighter that was flown by the U. S. Navy and Marine Corps. The FJ Fury was a major milestone as the Navy developed its early jet fighters for carrier operations. Moving from the original straight-wing design of the FJ-1, the FJ-2 would become operational with the Marines, and the FJ-3 would become one of the first swept-wing jet fighters to operate from aircraft carriers of the U. S. Navy in large numbers, along with Grumman’s F9F Cougar. It was a small but essential step along the way that has led to the state-of-the-art supersonic fighters that followed. In 2003, Detail & Scale originally published FJ Fury in Detail & Scale. That title covered all versions of the Fury, including the FJ-4 and FJ-4B. This new publication is the first of two parts that significantly expand the coverage of that original book, and it covers the prototypes through the FJ-3 and FJ-3M. The FJ-4 and FJ-4B will be the subjects of FJ Fury in Detail & Scale, Part 2: FJ-4 & FJ-4B Variants. The book begins with a chapter on the developmental history of the aircraft, covering its design and the production commitment by the Navy while World War II was still ongoing, through the evolution of the Fury up to the major redesign that resulted in the FJ-4 variant which will be covered in Part 2. This is followed by a chapter which takes a closer look at each early variant of the Fury, from the straight-winged FJ-1, to the swept-wing FJ-2 which was basically a navalized version of the Air Force’s F-86E Sabre, to the improved FJ-3 and FJ-3M variants with a more powerful engine. Also included is a section on the XFJ-2 and XFJ-2B prototypes. The hallmark of the Detail & Scale Series, the details chapter, follows. The Fury Details chapter in this Part 1 is divided into two sections, one covering the original FJ-1, and the second covering the FJ-2 and FJ-3/FJ-3M. Each section is as large as a typical details chapter in most Detail & Scale Series publications. Between the two sections, there are more than 180 detailed photographs and illustrations in the Fury Details chapter. As with all titles in the Detail & Scale Series of books, the last few pages are dedicated to scale modelers. In the years since our first book on the Fury was published, several new kits of the these early variants of the Fury have been released, and these are all covered with reviews and photographs along with the older kits. The digital version of FJ Fury in Detail & Scale, Part 1: Prototypes Through FJ-3 Variants, has 178 pages, 269 photographs (211 in color), and 10 full-color profiles.

P 51 Mustang In Detail Scale Part 2 written by Bert Kinzey and has been published by Detail & Scale this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-20 with History categories.

The P-51 Mustang was one of only a very few military aircraft that could be conclusively called a “war-winning design.” It was a truly remarkable aircraft design that evolved from a beautiful aerodynamic prototype that was created in just a few short months into an aircraft that finally allowed the American strategy of daylight precision bombing to be successfully and effectively achieved. This publication is the second part of a three-volume set of books in the Detail & Scale Series that present a detailed look at the North American P-51 Mustang and its British counterparts. Part 1 covered the early Allison-powered variants, and this volume takes a look at the early Merlin-powered Mustangs, including the P-51B, P-51C, F-6C, and the Mustang Mk. III. Part 3 will cover the P-51D and later variants of the Mustang, including their photo-reconnaissance and British versions. Following the introduction, the first chapter summarizes the developmental and operational history of these Mustang variants which saw the excellent and combat proven North American design turned into a superb high-altitude fighter with the change to the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Produced in large quantities at two facilities, the P-51Bs and P-51Cs served in every theater of the war and proved themselves to be among the most outstanding fighters of World War II. Those converted to the F-6C photo-reconnaissance sub-variant provided valuable intelligence information to Allied commanders. Others, ordered by the British as the Mustang Mk. III, served in the Royal Air Force and with other Commonwealth Air Forces. The next chapter takes a closer look at each variant of these early Merlin-powered Mustangs with a separate section for each. These not only include the production versions, but the Mustang Mk. X and XP-51B experimental and developmental aircraft are also covered, as is the F-6C photo-reconnaissance sub-variant. The text in each section is complemented with photographs, and art profiles are included for each of the production variants. Following the variants chapter is a gallery of photographs that illustrate the different paint schemes and some of the markings used on these early Merlin-powered Mustang variants. As with all volumes in the Detail & Scale Series, the primary focus is on the details of the aircraft, and the details chapter includes ten different sections in which there are more than one hundred detail photographs and illustrations, most of which are in color, and many were taken specifically for this publication. The book concludes with our usual Modelers Section where scale modelers will find concise and objective reviews of the kits available of the early Merlin-powered Mustang variants. All standard modeling scales are covered, and recommendations are made as how to correct inaccuracies and add details to the kits. P-51 Mustang in Detail & Scale, Part 2 has over 220 high-resolution photographs, over 100 of which are in full color, plus eight illustrations and 14 full-color profiles.

F2h Banshee In Detail Scale Part 2 written by Bert Kinzey and has been published by Detail & Scale this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-10 with History categories.

The McDonnell F2H Banshee holds a unique place in the annals of United States naval aviation. Like its contemporaries in the North American FJ Fury and the Grumman F9F Panther, the original design evolved into a significantly different aircraft. In 2016, Detail & Scale published F2H Banshee in Detail & Scale, Part 1: Prototypes Through F2H-2 Variants. That book covered the early Banshee variants that, alongside Grumman F9F Panthers, were among the first jet fighters to serve in large numbers and to see combat with the U. S. Navy and Marines. F2H-2 fighters and F2H-2P photo-reconnaissance Banshees were used extensively by both services during the Korean War. This new title in the Detail & Scale Series picks up where that book left off and covers the larger F2H-3 and F2H-4 Banshees that were developed from the earlier Banshee variants, primarily to be all-weather interceptors. Because they were larger in size than the previous variants, the F2H-3 and F2H-4 became known as “Big Banshees,” or more commonly “Big Banjos.” Although the F2H-3 and F2H-4 were based on the original design and shared many commonalities with their predecessors on the McDonnell production lines, there were noticeable and important differences, both physical and operational. This new title discusses these differences in considerable detail. We begin with a Developmental History that traces how the all-weather Banshees were designed, developed, and produced to fill a pressing need for a jet fighter that could perform the fleet defense mission in any kind of weather, day or night. Changes made to the airframe and features that were added are discussed and illustrated. The second chapter focuses specifically on the F2H-3 and F2H-4 in separate sections, explaining the major difference between the two variants and covering the squadrons to which they were assigned. A third section in the chapter is devoted to the Canadian F2H-3s flown by the Royal Canadian Navy, the only non-U. S. operator of any Banshee variant. Numerous photographs and art profiles illustrate the markings used by many of the squadrons that flew the “Big Banshees.” The use of several different paint schemes on the F2H-3 and F2H-4 is a very interesting story itself, and it involves the Navy’s experiment with carrier-based jet fighters in a natural metal finish. This is covered in the third chapter, and the reasons why the multiple schemes were developed, tried, and used operationally are explained and illustrated with both photographs and artwork. The Canadian paint scheme is also covered in this chapter. As is the case with all titles in the Detail & Scale Series of publications, the details of the aircraft are the primary focus. The Banshee Details chapter includes more than 120 photographs and illustrations covering the aircraft extensively inside and out. Among the nine different sections of this chapter is one on the weapons certified for use on the F2H-3 and F2H-4 as well as the under-wing stations on which they were carried. A large majority of the photographs in the Banshee Details chapter were taken specifically for this publication. The book concludes with a Modelers Section that reviews and illustrates the model kits of the “Big Banshee” that are available to the scale modeler. The digital edition of F2H Banshee in Detail &; Scale, Part 2: F2H-3 and F2H-4 Variants has 147 pages with 192 photos, 127 in color, and over three dozen color profiles and illustrations.

Lockheed’s P-38 Lightning was a unique aircraft, even on the drawing board. When the prototype XP-38 first flew in January 1939, it was the fastest fighter plane of its day. It also possessed the longest range and had the heaviest armament of any fighter. Each subsequent version improved upon the preceding one. Early versions of the Lightning faced significant operational issues. British fuels in the United Kingdom had some incompatibilities with the P-38’s exhaust-driven turbo supercharged engines. In all theaters, the early Lightnings dealt with high-speed compressibility issues and chronic engine cooling problems. The compressibility and engine cooling issues were overcome with the late Lightning variants, first delivered to the U. S. Army Air Forces in August 1943. These aircraft were the most refined and definitive P-38s. They played no small role in the successful conclusion of World War II by the Allies, especially in the Pacific Theater. In 1998, Detail & Scale published two books on the P-38 Lightning. These publications were very popular but have long been out of print. This publication is P-38 Lightning in Detail and Scale, Part 2. It is the second half of a pair of newly expanded, updated, and revised editions of Detail & Scale’s previous two-part coverage of the Lightning. Part 1 (Detail and Scale Series Volume 18) focuses on the XP-38 prototype through the P-38H and all associated photographic reconnaissance variants. This new P-38 Lightning in Detail and Scale Part 2 (Detail and Scale Series Volume 19) is similarly updated to cover the late Lightnings; the P-38J through P-38M variants, the F-5B through F-5G photo recon aircraft, and the Droop Snoot and Pathfinder special-purpose variants. The XP-49 and XP-58, which were based on the Lightning, are also briefly examined. This publication features expanded and revised historical overviews of the later-model P-38s, along with detailed descriptions of each variant. Also included are numerous line drawings, created by Lloyd Jones specifically for Detail & Scale, that point out the specific changes made to each variant as the design was continuously improved. The Late Lightning Details chapter features new and expanded content compared to the original 1998 book. The chapter is illustrated with scores of detailed and meticulously restored photographs accompanied by captions that explain both important features and subtle differences between P-38 variants. While some of these images are original archival material, the great majority were chosen from hundreds of photos taken specifically for this book by the authors and their contributors. As is the case in all volumes in the Detail & Scale Series, a Modelers Section provides comprehensive reviews of the plastic model kits of the featured aircraft. Since the original release of this publication, the world of P-38 scale modeling has been particularly impacted by the release of the Tamiya 1/48th scale P-38J and the Trumpeter 1/32nd scale P-38L. These kits, and many more dating back to the 1960s, are examined in depth. Recommendations are made as to which kits in each scale are best, and suggestions for corrections and improvements are presented. P-38 Lightning in Detail & Scale, Part 2 contains 270 high-resolution photographs, almost 190 of which are in color. The details chapter alone has 169 photos, including 145 color images.

P-51 Mustang in Detail & Scale, Part 1 is the first in a three-volume series from Detail & Scale Aviation Publications that covers the North American P-51 Mustang, one of the most iconic fighter aircraft ever designed. The book is focused on the early Mustangs, those equipped with the Allison engine, and it fully covers these aircraft from the NA-73X prototype through the P-51A, including the photographic-reconnaissance F-6A and F-6B derivatives, and the early British variants, the Mustang Mk. I, Mk. IA, and Mk. II. Subsequent volumes will be P-51 Mustang in Detail & Scale, Part 2, which will cover the Rolls Royce/Packard-engined P-51B and C models, and P-51 Mustang in Detail & Scale, Part 3, which looks at the iconic P-51D and the subsequent variants. P-51 Mustang in Detail & Scale, Part 1 begins with a history of the development and operational use of the Allison-engined variants. The P-51 Mustang initially came into being to help provide the British with as many first-line fighters as possible at a time when they were needed the most as Germany prepared to invade England. Lt. Benjamin Kelsey, the head of the Army Air Corps Pursuit Projects Office at Wright Field, Ohio, used his knowledge of aerodynamics and his ingenuity to ensure that the U. S. Army would also acquire the Mustang as America’s entry into World War II became more imminent with each passing day. The history chapter not only covers the development of the early Mustang variants, but it also summarizes their valuable contributions to the Allied war effort. The next chapter takes a closer look at each of the Allison-engined variants, pointing out their differences and features with informative text and photographs. The A-36 dive bomber version gets special treatment with no less than thirty-seven photographs, many of which illustrate its unique features and details. The variants chapter covers both the fighter and photo-recon variants of each version. Scale drawings are provided for the production variants, and differences and unique features are indicated on these drawings. Next comes the Allison-engined Mustang Details chapter that provides in-depth coverage of the common details of these variants. Nine different sections in this chapter include more than 140 photographs that illustrate the details more extensively than any other publication. 139 of these photographs are in color, and most were taken specifically for Detail & Scale. As with all Detail & Scale Series publications, the book concludes with a Modelers Section that reviews the scale model kits of the Allison-engined Mustangs that have been issued to date. These objective reviews point out the good and not-so-good points about each kit and make recommendations as to which ones are best for scale modelers to use. P-51 Mustang in Detail & Scale, Part 1 has 245 high-resolution photographs, over 175 of which are in full color, plus ten scale drawings and seven full-color aircraft profiles.

The Republic F-105 Thunderchief is one of the most recognizable combat aircraft of the 20th century. Designed as a supersonic fighter-bomber with the ability to deliver both nuclear and conventional weapons, its lasting legacy was that of a conventional fighter-bomber with a significant combat history in Southeast Asia and in the early years of the Wild Weasel suppression of enemy air defenses mission. In 1982, Detail & Scale published its first book on the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. This new publication on the Thunderchief is not simply an expanded version of the original book with more color. The text and captions have been completely rewritten. All photographs that were originally taken in color are reproduced in color in this new book. The coverage in the form of text, photographs, and illustrations has been significantly expanded. Following the Introduction, a Thunderchief History chapter briefly summarizes the development and service of the F-105, including its use in the war in Southeast Asia where it played a major role as a fighter-bomber while also performing specialized missions. The next chapter takes a closer look at each variant of the Thunderchief, starting with the very first YF-105As and concluding with the specialized F-105F and F-105G Wild Weasels. The next chapter is called Arming the Thunderchief. The most common internal and external stores employed by the F-105 are covered in this chapter with no less than forty photographs and illustrations. From the two different Vulcan cannon arrangements to tactical nuclear weapons, from conventional bombs to napalm and CBUs, and from rockets to guided missiles, these weapons are covered in photographs and detailed illustrations. The major focus of each title in the Detail & Scale Series is devoted to covering the physical details of the aircraft. The Thunderchief Details chapter includes nine different sections that provide an in-depth look at the F-105 with scores of detailed photographs and illustrations covering the cockpit, canopy and windscreen, fuselage, internal bomb bay, wings, pylons, fuel tanks, ECM pods, landing gear, tail, and engine details. What makes this chapter even more valuable is that more than ninety percent of the photographs were taken of Thunderchiefs while they were still in operational service. Additionally, more than ninety percent are in color. As always, the final chapter in a Detail & Scale Series book is the Modelers Section. Several new scale model kits have been released in the forty-one years since Detail & Scale published its first book on the Thunderchief, and all of these, along with the older ones, are covered. As explained in the reviews, some of the older kits are better than the more recent ones when it comes to accuracy. F-105 Thunderchief in Detail & Scale is 193 pages and has 260 photographs, 230 in color, plus color artwork. The Thunderchief Details chapter alone has 149 photographs and illustrations.

F 80 Shooting Star In Detail Scale written by Bert Kinzey and has been published by Detail & Scale this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-12-25 with History categories.

Designed under great secrecy and in considerable haste by a team led by Clarence L. “Kelly” Johnson during World War II, Lockheed’s P-80 Shooting Star will forever hold a significant place in the history of American military aviation as the first jet fighter to reach operational status with the U. S. Army Air Forces. The USAAF later became the U. S. Air Force in 1947, and with the creation of the U. S. Air Force, the Shooting Star was redesignated the F-80. It would go on to serve as a fighter-bomber in the Korean War. It would become the first USAF jet fighter to score an aerial victory, and one would be credited with the first jet-on-jet aerial kill in history. RF-80s would become the first jet-powered photographic reconnaissance aircraft to serve with the USAF. F-80 Shooting Star in Detail & Scale provides a comprehensive look at this important and historic jet fighter, beginning with a history chapter that traces its inception during World War II through its use in the Korean War and later service with Air National Guard squadrons. This is followed by a chapter that takes a closer look at each of the different variants of the Shooting Star, from the XP-80 prototype through the QF-80 drones and DF-80 drone directors. Because the P-80/F-80 was the first jet fighter to become operational with the Air Force, quite a few were used for various developmental experiments and tests, and these are also covered in the variants chapter. The Navy’s and Marine’s use of the Shooting Star as the TO-1 and TV-1 is also included in that chapter. The next chapter takes a look at the Shooting Star’s combat service in the Korean War, both as a fighter-bomber and as a tactical reconnaissance aircraft. But the primary focus of all volumes in the Detail & Scale Series of publications is to illustrate the aircraft in extensive detail, and the Shooting Star Details chapter provides the most detailed look at the F-80 and RF-80 that has ever been published. More than 125 photographs and illustrations show the Shooting Star in incredible detail, both inside and out. Photographs from the files of Lockheed and the U. S. Air Force are included along with dozens taken of existing aircraft by the author and several other aviation photographers. As with all titles in the Detail & Scale Series, this book concludes with a Modelers Section that reviews the scale model kits that have been produced of the Shooting Star.
