A partir de siete preguntas que funcionan como disparadores, ¿A qué llamamos literatura? intenta responder cuestiones centrales en los estudios literarios: cómo se clasifican las obras, por qué las valoramos, qué valoramos en ellas, cómo representan mundos posibles, cómo las leemos, cómo circulan en la vida social, cómo se insertan en los conflictos que atraviesan nuestra cultura. Dirigido por José Luis de Diego, el presente volumen es el resultado de convertir —obligado por las restricciones sanitarias de 2020— las clases orales en clases escritas. Con una prosa accesible y cercana, sin notas al pie ni un agobiante aparato teórico, cada capítulo busca abrirse paso entre los lectores comunes, interesados en la literatura, que nunca siguieron estudios sistemáticos, y promueve una aproximación crítica a ese objeto de estudio. Las preguntas, como instrumentos pedagógicos, ayudan a pensar y ordenar las experiencias de lectura, a menudo caóticas y azarosas. Desde Aristóteles a Erich Auerbach y Terry Eagleton, pasando por los formalistas rusos; desde Gustave Flaubert y Franz Kafka a Julio Cortázar y Roberto Arlt, entre otros, este libro se pregunta por la ficción, los géneros, la mímesis, el realismo, el canon, la verosimilitud, la historia literaria y la crítica. Como lo sintetiza el propio De Diego en su prólogo: "' Enseñar literatura—decía un recordado profesor— más que transmitir un saber es contagiar una pasión.' Ojalá este libro logre ese objetivo."

Antonio Alatorre reunió, en 1993, trece artículos en los que expone su manera de ver la literatura y de entender y ejercer la crítica literaria. No formula ninguna "teoría literaria" ni ninguna "metodología" (nada más ajeno a sus afanes), simplemente propone su manera de entender dos fenómenos indisolublemente trabados: la literatura y la lectura. Alatorre muestra que el que lee y, muy importante, siente lo que lee, es ya un crítico literario en potencia: con las herramientas adecuadas será capaz de pensar críticamente y de explicar las razones de la emoción experimentada. El crítico no es sino un lector más "formado", más "instruido", dotado de mayor capacidad de recepción, de mayor sagacidad literaria y de la capacidad y honradez para transmitir elocuente y claramente su experiencia de lector. Este "librito" se publicó originalmente en la colección Lecturas Mexicanas de Conaculta. Actualmente esta edición se encuentra agotada. De 1993 a 2010, Alatorre añadió algunas noticias más, pulió una que otra idea (pocas) y corrigió poquísimas cosillas de estilo. Se ofrece esta nueva edición (algo corregida y añadida) para conmemorar los 90 años del nacimiento de Antonio Alatorre.
