Es hat keinen Sinn, ber den Weg zu streiten, so lange man ber das Ziel nicht einig ist; auch die Methoden der Wissenschaften lassen sich erst dann beurtheilen, wenn ber die Aufgaben und Endpunkte derselben Klarheit herrscht. Mehr als irgend eine andre Disciplin hat das die Psychologie erfahren m ssen; mit Zeitopfern und Kraftvergeudung hat sie diese Erfahrungen bezahlt und so hat sie mehr als andere Wissenschaften Interesse daran, beim Vorw rtsdringen genau auf den Weg zu achten und immer wieder zu pr fen, ob ihre Methoden auch wirklich zweckm ssig, ausreichend und einwandsfrei seien. Und dazu kommt ein anderes. Keine zweite Wissenschaft verwerthet gegenw rtig so mannigfaltige und vor Allem so verschiedenartige Methoden wie die Psychologie. Nur weitgehende Arbeitstheilung erm glicht es, jede dieser Methoden fruchtbar auszunutzen, denn alle psychologischen Hilfsmittel gleichzeitig zu beherrschen, berragt bei weitem die Arbeitskraft eines einzelnen. Wer in dem Grenzgebiet zwischen Psychologie und Philosophie heimisch ist, wird den psychophysiologischen Fragen vielleicht ferner stehen; wer in der psychologischen Beobachtung verst mmelter Thiere oder Geisteskranker oder Hypnotisirter ge bt ist, wird mit den Diensten, welche Statistik und Sociologie bieten, vielleicht nichts anzufangen wissen; wer an psychologischen oder psychophysischen Experimenten Interesse nimmt, oder mit Vorliebe der Selbstbeobacht...

Despite an ever-growing scholarly interest in the work of Edmund Husserl and in the history of the phenomenological movement, much of the contemporaneous scholarly context surrounding Husserl's work remains shrouded in darkness. While much has been written about the critiques of Husserl's work associated with Heidegger, Levinas, and Sartre, comparatively little is known of the debates that Husserl was directly involved in. The present volume addresses this gap in scholarship by presenting a comprehensive selection of contemporaneous responses to Husserl's work. Ranging in date from 1906 to 1917, these texts bookend Husserl's landmark Ideas for a Pure Phenomenology and Phenomenological Philosophy (1913). The selection encompasses essays that Husserl responded to directly in the Ideas I, as well as a number of the critical and sympathetic essays that appeared in the wake of its publication. Significantly, the present volume also includes Husserl's subsequent responses to his critics. All of the texts included have been translated into English for the first time, introducing the reader to a wide range of long-neglected material that is highly relevant to contemporary debates regarding the meaning and possibility of phenomenology.

In the late nineteenth century, scientists, psychiatrists, and medical practitioners began employing a new experimental technique for the study of neuroses: hypnotism. Though the efforts of the famous French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot to transform hypnosis into a laboratory science failed, his Viennese translator and disciple Sigmund Freud took up the challenge and invented psychoanalysis. Previous scholarship has viewed hypnosis and psychoanalysis in sharp opposition or claimed that both were ultimately grounded in the phenomenon of suggestion and thus equally flawed. In this groundbreaking study, Andreas Mayer reexamines the relationship between hypnosis and psychoanalysis, revealing that the emergence of the familiar Freudian psychoanalytic setting cannot be understood without a detailed analysis of the sites, material and social practices, and controversies within the checkered scientific and medical landscape of hypnotism. Sites of the Unconscious analyzes the major controversies between competing French schools of hypnotism that emerged at this time, stressing their different views on the production of viable evidence and their different ways of deploying hypnosis. Mayer then reconstructs in detail the reception of French hypnotism in German-speaking countries, arguing that the distinctive features of Freud’s psychoanalytic setting of the couch emerged out of the clinical laboratories and private consulting rooms of the practitioners of hypnosis.

Diese psychische Strukturbildung – der „gesellschaftlich typische Charakter“ – ist das Bindeglied zwischen den Erfordernissen des Lebens und Zusammenlebens und den Ideen und Werten einer Gesellschaft – sozusagen das „missing link“ zwischen Basis und Überbau.
