Ein Buch kann verschiedene Zwecke verfolgen. Es kann z. B. belehren oder unterhalten. Dieses kleine Buch hat das Ziel, daß der Leser die Welt mit anderen Augen zu sehen beginnt, und wenn es nur bei einem einzigen gelänge, wäre es nicht umsonst geschrieben. Es handelt vom Lebensweg. Wir kommen zur Welt, bleiben eine Zeitlang und verlassen sie wieder. Die Welt war schon da, das heißt vorhanden, als wir noch nicht waren, und sie wird noch da sein, wenn wir nicht mehr sind; ebenso die Dinge. Sie sind da und dort, an diesen oder jenen Stellen. Wir kommen nur hinzu. In die vorhandene Welt mit ihren Menschen und Dingen zeichnen wir unseren Lebensweg ein. Das ist, glaube ich, die natürliche Ansicht und eine andere, daß die Welt und die Dinge nicht ohne uns da sein können, wäre in der Tat vermessen und geradezu lächerlich. Nun können wir allerdings auch sagen: Die Welt mit ihren Dingen und Menschen war noch nicht da, als wir noch nicht da waren, sie ist zeitweilig da und wird nicht mehr da sein, wenn wir nicht mehr sind. Wie löse ich den Widerspruch? Offenbar habe ich das Wort da auf verschiedene Weise gebraucht und je nach dem bedeutet es Verschiedenes. Einmal bedeutet es: vorhanden, an einer Stelle (auf die ich zeigen kann). Das andere Mal bedeutet es: zur Stelle sein (es zeigt sich), zugegen sein, anwesend sein. So können wir einerseits sagen, daß wir unseren Lebensweg in der vorhandenen Welt mit ihren Menschen und Dingen auslegen nach dem Modell: dies und das da und dort dann und wann.

„The enamel pictures of the Hungarian Saint Crown” mark the pick of the successful painter’s carrier of Éva Nyáry. Her uncle, Ernest Nyáry,Archbishop of Baghdad inspired the paintings of equal size, representing the pictures decorating the crown of our first king, Saint Stephan’s, presented with national and international recognition to the interested public. The artist published the birth of the art pieces and the spirit and history of the crown in a work published with the similar title in 2002. She took the pen in 2006 and composed her following book entitled The Ancient Hungarian decorative art. Mgr. Ernest Nyáry, Carmelite monk, archbishop of the Catholic Latin mission of Baghdad, a member of the Saint Congregation of the Oriental Churches, awarded with the French Legion of Honor, approaching the age of 80 came to see his disciples, parents and friends living in Hungary for the last time, and than he transmitted his legacy in full to his brother Joseph’s daughter, confiding her to preserve and manage it. Her father told many stories to Éva Nyáry about the romantic priest’s carrier in her childhood. The several long meeting with him in the eighties meant her extraordinary impressions. The recorded conversations, the writings published about the noble thinking, sainted monk, matured the conception to share her impressions with readers. When she was handed over his diaries, texts, correspondence, photos and recorded memories, having his uncle’s complete confidence, she has already felt as an obligation to work this fantastic treasury up. Ernest Nyáry’s history of life who was born in an ancient Hungarian noble family in Turcansky Peter, today Slovakia in 1906, evolved in the priest’s vocation, bridging world wars and continents—served as a lesson about faith, tolerance, decisions made in critical moments, and especially about humanity. Éva Nyáry’s newest work follows her uncle’s fantastic life relying on the documents at her disposal, many original quotations, and contemporary descriptions with historic fidelity. The unordinary story is completed by the archive photos of the legacy.

Pulling together the threads of forty years of research on oblique subjects in the Germanic languages, this book introduces a novel approach to grammatical relations, based on a definition of subject as the first argument of the argument structure. New data are presented from Gothic, Old Saxon, Old Norse-Icelandic, Old Swedish and Old Danish, as well as from Icelandic, Faroese and German. This includes alternating Dat-Nom/Nom-Dat predicates, where either argument, the dative or the nominative, takes on subject behavior. The subject concept is modeled with the formalism of Construction Grammar, both synchronically and for the purpose of reconstructing grammatical relations for Proto-Germanic.

It is a misconception that Christianity and Humanism are in any way in conflict with each other. Mankind's constant struggle with physical as well as mental weaknesses is omnipresent in ancient literature: misconduct, wrongdoing, failure and experiences of contingency are anthropological phenomena. Ancient ethics, epistemology, and natural philosophy have developed different theoretical approaches and guidelines on how to act and how to overcome all kinds of problems. Christian theology, on the other hand, has explained moral failure as a symptom of original sin, comparing decline and destruction to a burden from which mankind is relieved only at the end. The contributions explore how ancient philosophical texts, both pagan and Christian, explain, conceptualize and integrate the myriad manifestations of human fallibility into the different philosophical schools. The focus is on anthropological, ontological and theological concepts that analyse and reflect human fallibility, as well as on the textual and linguistic representation of the phenomenon in ancient literature. Several contributions in the volume explore literary texts that discuss or illustrate the philosophical dimension of fallibility, such as satire's or tragedy's (often exaggerated) depiction of human weakness.
