Am Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts richtete sich in ganz Europa und innerhalb aller christlicher Konfessionen die Aufmerksamkeit auf die Frömmigkeit. Zwischen den verschiedenen Frömmigkeitsbewegungen, die so entstanden, wie dem Puritanismus in England, der Nadere Reformatie in den Niederlanden und dem deutschen Pietismus, gab es intensive Verbindungen, in denen Übersetzungen von Erbauungsliteratur eine wichtige Rolle spielten. Während die Forschung diese Übersetzungen bisher eher auf der Makroebene behandelt hat, untersucht Jan van de Kamp erstmals ein Netzwerk von Übersetzern, die englische und niederländische Bücher ins Deutsche übertragen haben. Er zeigt, dass Netzwerke bei der Produktion, Distribution und Rezeption der Übersetzungen eine sehr große Rolle spielten. Zudem geht er darauf ein, wie groß der Einfluss von Puritanismus und Nadere Reformatie auf den deutschen Pietismus war und inwiefern die erwähnten Bewegungen miteinander verbunden waren.
