El 27 de abril de 1857, ochenta y cinco soldados de un regimiento Bengalí de la British East Indian Company, publicado en Meerut, desobedecieron las órdenes de su oficial británico superior, de usar los nuevos cartuchos para los nuevos rifles Enfield, presuntamente empacados en grasa de vaca y cerdo.
