"Mitos raíces universales" fue escrito en 1990. En la "Aclaración", incluida en el libro, se dice: Desde tiempos lejanos existió el afán por definir al mito, a la leyenda y a la fábula; por separar el cuento y el relato poco probable de la descripción veraz. Se ha realizado un gran trabajo para demostrar que los mitos son el ropaje simbólico de verdades fundamentales, o bien transposiciones de fuerzas cósmicas a seres con intención. Se ha dicho que se trata de transformismos en los que personajes vagamente históricos se elevan a la categoría de héroes o dioses. Se ha teorizado para mostrar las realidades objetivas que subyacen en la deformación de la razón. Se ha investigado para descubrir en esas proyecciones el conflicto psicológico profundo. Y así, esa enorme tarea ha resultado útil porque nos ha ayudado a comprender, casi en laboratorio, cómo los mitos nuevos luchan con los antiguos para ganar su espacio. Aún en las teorías científicas podemos observar que cuando se despegan del ámbito que les es propio y echan a volar sin demostración es porque ya se han instalado a nivel de creencia social y han cobrado la fuerza plástica de la imagen tan importante como referencia y tan decisiva para orientar conductas. Y en esa nueva imagen que irrumpe podemos ver los avatares de antiguos mitos remozados por la modificación del paisaje social al que se debe dar respuesta por exigencia de los tiempos... Recomendamos la lectura completa de la "Aclaración" y de la "Conferencia del autor", ya que ambas pueden ayudar a comprender el método utilizado en el tratamiento de los principales mitos de diez culturas.

A partir de una revisión sistemática de la literatura, se destacan ideas como el vínculo entre la especialización productiva en recursos naturales y los términos de intercambio desfavorables, formulada en los años cincuenta; la soberanía sobre los recursos naturales, en los sesenta; la enunciación temprana del principio de responsabilidades comunes pero diferenciadas, en los setenta; los estilos de desarrollo y medio ambiente, en los ochenta; la competitividad espuria, en los noventa, y la gobernanza de los recursos naturales, el estilo de desarrollo sostenible con igualdad y el gran impulso ambiental, en las dos primeras décadas del siglo XXI. El pensamiento neoestructuralista de la CEPAL es dinámico, abierto y se renueva permanentemente sin perder su tradición estructuralista. El libro aporta también elementos conceptuales para formular un neoestructuralismo ecológico.
