This book focuses on the social voids that were the result of occupation, genocide, mass killings, and population movements in Europe during and after the Second World War. Historians, sociologists, and anthropologists adopt comparative perspectives on those who now lived in ‘cleansed’ borderlands. Its contributors explore local subjectivities of social change through the concept of ‘No Neighbors’ Lands’: How does it feel to wear the dress of your murdered neighbor? How does one get used to friends, colleagues, and neighbors no longer being part of everyday life? How is moral, social, and legal order reinstated after one part of the community participated in the ethnic cleansing of another? How is order restored psychologically in the wake of neighbors watching others being slaughtered by external enemies? This book sheds light on how destroyed European communities, once multi-ethnic and multi-religious, experienced postwar reconstruction, attempted to come to terms with what had happened, and negotiated remembrance. This volume brings together a diverse group of scholars from North America and Europe to explore the history and memory of Germany’s fateful push for power in the Balkans during the era of the two world wars and the long postwar period. Each chapter focuses on one or more of four interrelated themes: war, empire, (forced) migration, and memory. The first section, “War and Empire in the Balkans,” explores Germany’s quest for empire in Southeast Europe during the first half of the century, a goal that was pursued by economic and military means. The book’s second section, “Aftershocks and Memories of War,” focuses on entangled German-Balkan histories that were shaped by, or a direct legacy of, Germany’s exceptionally destructive push for power in Southeast Europe during World War II. German-Balkan Entangled Histories in the Twentieth Century expands and enriches the neglected topic of Germany’s continued entanglements with the Balkans in the era of the world wars, the Cold War, and today.

Der spätere Nobelpreisträger Friedrich A. von Hayek publizierte kurz vor dem "D-Day" des Jahres 1944 sein analytisches Meisterstück "The Road to Serfdom". Er präsentierte damit eine präzise Beschreibung der wesentlichen gesellschaftspolitischen Ursachen, die zu der nationalsozialistischen Gewaltherrschaft inmitten Europas geführt hatten. Und er beschrieb die fatalen Parallelen, die auch in den kommunistischen Strukturen der autoritären Sowjetunion erkennbar geworden waren. Wer den intellektuellen Anspruch an sich selbst stellt, Lehren aus der Geschichte ziehen zu wollen, auf dass sich nicht noch einmal menschenverachtende und mörderische gesellschaftliche oder staatliche Strukturen etablieren können, der kommt an diesem Stück Weltliteratur nicht vorbei. Menschenrechte und eine freiheitliche Ordnung erfordern respektvollen Umgang miteinander. Die Anmaßung, andere kraft vorgestellten Besserwissens fremdbestimmen zu dürfen, ist auch 80 Jahre nach der Erstpublikation so gefährlich wie je.
