Oriëntalisme zorgde bij verschijnen in 1978 voor een grote omslag in de Midden-Oostenstudies en had een blijvend effect op postkoloniale en culturele studies. Met de term, gemunt door Said, wordt de ‘westerse’ kijk op het Oosten gedefinieerd, een invloedrijke Europees-ideologi¬sche schepping die het mogelijk maakte om te gaan met het ‘andere’ van de oosterse cultuur. Oriëntalisme maakt het Oosten ondergeschikt aan het Westen. Die simplificatie gaat terug tot op de oude Grieken en is in de eeu¬wen daarna in de literatuur, schilderkunst, geschiedschrijving, we¬tenschap en de politiek verder verdiept. Het legde de basis voor het westerse kolonialisme én, stelt Said, het Westen verschafte zich er een eigen identiteit mee door zich te profileren als ‘verheven’. Said onderzoekt klassieke Europese werken die een groot aandeel hebben in het exotische beeld dat het Westen schiep van het Oosten en beschrijft hoe oriëntalistische beeldvorming een reflectie kan zijn van imperialisme en racisme.
