Seine in 25 Sprachen übersetzte Werke wurden, mit mehr als 50 Millionen verkauften Stück bald ein weltweiter Erfolg. Wie bei den meisten Bestsellern sollte es auch hier nur eine Frage der Zeit sein bis „Der Herr der Ringe“ verfilmt werden würde.

Nicht nur die Einspielergebnisse der ersten beiden Teile von insgesamt ca. 1,73 Milliarden Dollar3, sondern auch mehrere Auszeichnungen4 sind Belege hierfür. Die folgende Arbeit untersucht wie der innere Kampf zwischen Gollum und Sméagol5 durch Bildkomposition, Musik, Beleuchtung und Einstellungsgröße filmisch umgesetzt wird. Gollum bzw. Sméagol ist in diesem Film eine vollständig computeranimierte Figur. Bereits im Vorfeld wurden ca. „100 verschiedene Modelle von Gollum angefertigt, bis sich Regisseur, Designer und Computerspezialisten auf eine endgültige Version einigen konnten, die dieser Gestalt gerecht werden konnte“. 6 In einem ersten Kapitel werde ich zunächst grundlegende Fakten zu Sméagol und seine Verwandlung in Gollum aufführen. Zum besseren Verständnis der Sequenzanalysen gehe ich zudem näher auf Gründe ein, warum Sméagol wieder stärker in den Vordergrund tritt. Im darauf folgenden Kapitel werden drei Sequenzen aus Der Herr der Ringe – Die zwei Türme analysiert und es soll hierbei die Wirkung der filmischen Mittel in Bezug auf die Darstellung der inneren Zerrissenheit Gollums sowie deren Einflussnahme auf das Anti- bzw. Sympathieverhaltens gegenüber Sméagol untersucht werden. Danach werden im vierten Kapitel die zuvor ermittelten Untersuchungsergebnisse des Verhältnisses zwischen Filmtechnik bzw. Bildkomposition und den jeweiligen Charakterzügen Gollums/Sméagols komprimiert dargestellt.
