Zunächst wird eine Einleitung in den Begriff "Digital Divide", als Ausdruck für die Spaltung der Gesellschaft in Internet-Nutzer und Nichtnutzer, gegeben. In diesem Zusammenhang werden die Synonyme "Digitale Spaltung" und "Digitale Kluft" erläutert. Gleichzeitig wird auf zwei Thesen der Wissenskluft eingegangen, wobei das Hauptaugenmerk auf dem sozialen und wirtschaftlichen Chancenunterschied liegt, der durch den Zugang zu digitalen Medien verursacht wird. Anschließend werden unterschiedliche Faktoren als Ursachen des "Digital Divide" erläutert. Im Mittelpunkt werden dabei die Nutzerverhalten nach Alter, Geschlecht, Bildungsniveau, Einkommen, Bundesgebiet und Zugangsvoraussetzung beschrieben. Weiterführend werden die Internetnutzer, entsprechend den vorher definierten Faktoren, verschiedenen Profilen zugeordnet. Die Einteilung erfolgt dabei in sechs Gruppen (Digitaler Außenseiter, Gelege-heitsnutzer, Berufsnutzer, Trendnutzer, Digitale Profis, Digitale Avantgarde), die entspre-chend ihrer Merkmalsausprägungen dargestellt werden. Nachfolgend werden die Gründe und Merkmale beschrieben, die zu einer Nichtnutzung des Internet führen. Im nachfolgenden Schritt wird eine Übersicht der Internetnutzung im europäischen Vergleich gegeben. Dabei kristallisieren sich zwei signifikante Muster heraus. In den nordeuropäischen Staaten ist die Nutzung des Internet höher, als im Süden Europas. Zusätzlich wird ersichlich, dass sowohl im Osten als auch im Westen geringe Nutzeranteile vorhanden sind als in Eu-ropas Zentrum. The emergence of the Internet as a world wide web in the late 1990s made access to information and knowledge significantly easier. Soon after the Internet started reaching the masses, concerns about its unequal distribution appeared. The digital divide that is manifested in access and usage differences between individuals, groups, regions and even countries is created between those who have access to information and communication technologies and know how to utilise them, and those who do not. Empirical studies supply strong evidence that many of those who are digitally excluded are also socially excluded, i.e., digital inequality is strongly related to economic and social stratification. Specifically, empirical studies have examined the digital divide as reflected in gaps in digital access, digital literacy, digital competence, digital, Internet and computer skills, attitudes towards computer and Internet and digital uses between different population groups. This book further reviews the issues, recommendations and new research on the digital divide.
