‚Zwölf Kilo in sechs Wochen‘, ‚Nie wieder XXL‘ oder ‚Nun purzeln die Pfunde‘ lauten die Schlagwörter zahlloser Diätratgeber. In Rezeptheften, Sportzeitschriften, Frauenmagazinen und in unüberschaubar vielen Internetforen erteilen sie Tipps und Tricks, wie Frau und auch Mann am besten, schnellsten und unkompliziertesten zum Wunschgewicht und der Traumfigur gelangen. Ein Geheimnis verraten sie dabei jedoch nicht: Das wesentlichste Kampfmittel gegen Übergewicht ist das Hungern. Der (selektive) Verzicht auf Nahrungsmittel soll möglichst nahe an das in den Medien dauerpräsente schlanke Körperideal bringen, das mit Gesundheit, Willenskraft, Disziplin, Intelligenz etc. assoziiert wird. Die Erscheinung eines dünnen Körpers kann jedoch noch eine ganz andere Assoziation erwecken. Ein magerer Körper ist möglicherweise Ausdruck einer Essstörung, vornehmlich der Anorexia nervosa. Die Anzahl der Diagnosen hat sich in den Wohlfahrtsstaaten der westlichen Industrieländer seit den 1970er Jahren stetig vergrößert. Die Betroffenen leiden nicht am Hunger, sondern am Essen, das sie möglichst vermeiden wollen. Der Verzicht auf Essen ist immer eine Art der Auflehnung gegen den eigenen Körper und gegen eine durch Essen sozialisierte, organisierte, und gruppierte Gesellschaft. Aufgrund dieser Bedeutungsdimension ist das freiwillige Hungern ein attraktives Thema für die Literatur. Wie die poetische Literatur den voluntaristischen Nahrungsverzicht verarbeitet und welche Funktionen er einnimmt, soll in dieser Arbeit untersucht werden. Ziel ist es, zu prüfen, ob diese Thematik in verschiedenen Texten mit ähnlichen Merkmalen hinsichtlich der Hauptfigur und der formalen Gestaltung der Texte zusammenhängt. Hinzukommend soll in der vorliegenden Arbeit herausgefunden werden, ob mithilfe des freiwilligen Hungerns Ansichten über die Kunst und eine gesellschaftskritische Auffassung transportiert werden. Die poetischen Funktionen des freiwilligen Hungerns werden anhand der Texte Hunger von Knut Hamsun und Ein Hungerkünstler von Franz Kafka untersucht.
