From the beginning, the gospel has been understood and articulated in terms borrowed from the cultural context in which it finds itself. For the largest part of the church's history, the prevailing context has worked with a static vision of humanity and the world. Theology and philosophy perpetuated this static worldview. This was both legitimate and necessary as long as the culture was shaped by such a worldview. Since the advent of modernity, however, this is no longer the case. The advent of science and technology has seen the static view of things give way to an understanding of ourselves and our world as dynamic entities. This has made the traditional understanding of faith increasingly untenable. One might say that the gospel has become the prisoner of its previous embodiments. The church's determination to hold on to established forms, and with them the traditional understanding of humanity and the world, has led to its increasing alienation from the prevailing culture, especially in the West. For many in our society, the church's language has become increasingly incomprehensible and its message increasingly untenable. In this book, the author argues that the church's attachment to a static worldview is the fundamental cause of the current crisis, especially as this is manifest in western Europe. He provides a detailed discussion of the European context and analyzes the main features of the traditional, static understanding of faith and its roots in classical culture. He then examines the contemporary crisis of faith and offers a critical evaluation of attempts at 'restoration'. Finally, he proposes a vision of the way forward for the church as it struggles to come to terms with the modern worldview.

Mit dieser Arbeit liegt erstmals eine ausfuhrliche Entstehungsgeschichte und Wurdigung eines der sogenannten 'kleinen' Dokumente des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils (1962-1965) vor: Optatam totius, uber die Priesterausbildung (28. Oktober 1965). Uber den Reformbedarf der Seminare war man sich einig. In welche Richtung sollte die Erneuerung zielen? Zwei Richtungen rangen um eine neue Magna charta seit dem beruhmten Seminardekret von Trient (1563). Gleichzeitig wird ein neuer Blick auf die Kirchenversammlung eroffnet: Die Arbeit einer Kommission an einem der pastoralen Texte - eine Arbeit damals und heute im Schatten der sogenannten 'grossen' Debatten und Beschlusse. Eine Rezeption des Konzils aber muss bei all seinen Dokumenten ansetzen.Wer sollte das Konzil umsetzen, die Erneuerung verheutigen? In der Hauptsache waren die Priester gefragt. Darum legten viele der Konzilsprotagonisten diesem kleinen Text eine grosse Bedeutung bei. Das Seminardekret hat eine Dezentralisierung eingeleitet und Weichen fur eine menschlich, pastoral und geistlich ausgerichtete Ausbildung gestellt. Die weltkirchliche Rahmengesetzgebung wartete auf seine ortskirchliche Umsetzung. Welche Ziele hatte das Konzil tatsachlich im Sinn fur die Seminare? Optatam totius kann neu entdeckt werden als Orientierung in der andauernden Diskussion um die Priesterseminare heute. Zugleich markiert dieses Dekret den Wandel in der katholischen Theologie im 20. Jahrhundert. "Mit beispielhafter Ausdauer und im Streben nach grosster Genauigkeit verfolgt Dr. Greiler die Vorgeschichte, den Werdegang und auch die Nachwirkung des Konzilsdekretes uber die Ausbildung der Priester. Die Arbeit gibt einen Einblick in das angestrengte, nicht immer harmonische Muhen vieler Glieder der Kirche, die zu verschiedener Zeit und auf mannigfache Weise fur oder in einer Versammlung arbeiteten, die sich letztlich vom Heiligen Geist getragen wusste, in der aber menschliche Vermittlung nach besten Kraften zu leisten war... Wurden die bald nach Konzilsende auftauchenden Probleme zu wenig im voraus gespurt? - Als erste Antwort die Gegenfrage: Konnte die Kommission die 1968 hereinbrechende Sturmflut einer auch die Kirche in Mitleidenschaft ziehenden und bis heute fortwirkenden "Kulturrevolution" voraussehen?
