“Isolation has not worked...it’s time for a new approach” – President Barack Obama, Dec. 17, 2014 Cuba was forever changed by Fidel Castro's revolution that turned the island into a single-party Communist state. Half a century later, the nation has suffered under stifling policies and a lack of political freedom. Journey through the historical origins of the Caribbean nation and the consequences of this seminal event. Explore the ins-and-outs of past and present Cuba, and decide for yourself what lies in its political horizon. Now, the United States and Cuba have embarked on a new relationship as President Barack Obama declared an end to the diplomatic freeze with the island. While Obama spoke to Americans, Raul Castro addressed his island. He spoke about the profound differences in human rights and foreign policy, and how regardless of those differences they must learn to coexist "in a civilized manner." With a new dialogue underway, the future of Cuba appears ready to move forward.

Cuba has suffered a lot, but it is not because of Fidel Castro. It is true that things could have been different but longing for the non-existent is a weakness and not a strength. The strength lies in accepting reality and facing it, and that is what the Cuban people did when faced with the dilemma of being one more colony of the United States in the American continent as is, for example, Puerto Rico. God and history gave Cuba, my dear Cuba, the leaders it deserved for a very decisive period of its recent history. Commander Fidel was above all, a Thinker, and like all those who think, he was often wrong. Perhaps Cuba's greatest success and the glory of its Revolution has been precisely the rise of that people and nation, the rise of their cultural and intellectual level, nationalism, which will prepare them to defend for many generations their independence, their wealth and thus create prosperity for all. At least, that is the version of a great majority but, for its critics, there will always remain the echo of the word dictatorship which, on the ground, is the only state and the survival option of the Cuban regime in its state of cold war and blockade for almost a century. Fidel Castro Ruz was a great man, a man of the world, who presented to the world the soul of the Cuban people, and it is better to keep that, because we are all memories and points and data in history, just that. Thank you for reading these lines Javier Clemente Engonga, 13.07.2021

Cuba has loomed large in American memory and history. Throughout the last half-century, the island and its larger-than-life revolutionary leader have been key players in the Cold War and mythologized by Americans and American politicians. In 2016, relations thawed, and the country opened its doors to American. The Rolling Stones played in Havana. President Obama arrived too in March. He was the first President to visit the nation almost 100 years—since Coolidge in 1928. And then Fidel Castro passed away in November 2016, marking the end of the momentous era in Cuban history. In The Day Fidel Died, Patrick Symmes interweaves reporting from years spent traveling to the Cuban Island, a narrative history of the rise of Fidelismo and the last sixty-plus years of life there under Fidel. Symmes’ exploration of the Castros’ Cuba—how it came to be and what it’s becoming—paints a wondrous and striking portrait of the nation, its culture, politics and people for anyone first undertaking a trip or those still dreaming of doing so. A Vintage Shorts ebook original.

Fidel Castro When Fidel Castro died on November 25, 2016, it seemed as if much of the world didn't quite know what to make of the revolutionary leader. The images of loyal Cubans in Havana openly crying in the streets stood in stark contrast to the Cuban exiles and their descendants just 90 miles away in Miami, Florida. While Cuban citizens were mourning, Cuban Americans were celebrating; they were laughing, dancing, and drinking to celebrate Castro's demise. It seems that Fidel Castro was just as polarizing in death as he was in life. Inside you will read about... - The Beginnings of a Revolutionary - Castro Meets Che Guevara - The Bay of Pigs - The Cuban Missile Crisis - Castro's Soviet Ally - The Assassination Conspiracy - Doctors For Oil And much more! Learn more about the life of one of the twentieth century's most controversial figures.

On July 26, 2003, the 50th anniversary of the Moncada Army Barracks raid in Santiago de Cuba, something unexpected happens. When Fidel Pérez and his brother accidentally tumble to their deaths from their Havana balcony, the neighbors’ outcry, “Fidel has fallen,” is misinterpreted by those who hear it. The misinformation quickly ripples outward, and it reawakens the city. Three Cubans in particular are affected by the news—an elderly vagrant Saturnina, Professor Pedro Valle, and his student Camilo—all haunted by the past and now forced to confront a new future, perhaps another revolution. Their stories are beautifully intertwined as they converge in the frantic crowd that gathers in La Plaza de la Revolución. By turns humorous and deeply poignant, The Death of Fidel Pérez reflects on the broken promises of the Cuban Revolution and reveals the heart of a people with a long collective memory.

He towered over his Caribbean island for nearly five decades, a shaggy-bearded figure in combat fatigues whose long shadow spread across Latin America and the world. Few fired the hearts of the world's restless youth as Castro did when he was young, and few seemed so irrelevant as Castro when he was old -- the last Communist, railing on the empty, decrepit street corner that Cuba became under his rule. Fidel Castro: Life and Death of a Dictator follows key events that impacted the Caribbean island, its people, and the world during the tumultuous reign of this controversial dictator.

By the time he was killed in the jungles of Bolivia, where his body was displayed like a deposed Christ, Ernesto "Che" Guevara had become a synonym for revolution everywhere from Cuba to the barricades of Paris. This extraordinary biography peels aside the veil of the Guevara legend to reveal the charismatic, restless man behind it. Drawing on archival materials from three continents and on interviews with Guevara's family and associates, Castaneda follows Che from his childhood in the Argentine middle class through the years of pilgrimage that turned him into a committed revolutionary. He examines Guevara's complex relationship with Fidel Castro, and analyzes the flaws of character that compelled him to leave Cuba and expend his energies, and ultimately his life, in quixotic adventures in the Congo and Bolivia. A masterpiece of scholarship, Companero is the definitive portrait of a figure who continues to fascinate and inspire the world over.
