Não se trata de um livro de autoajuda, mas de um livro reflexivo que apontará para os contornos e as possibilidades de experiências espirituais fora do âmbito institucional-religioso. Partindo da concepção de Luc Ferry para quem a contemporaneidade se caracteriza fundamentalmente como a era do amor, compreenderemos, a partir desta leitura, que a secularização e o processo de desconstrução acontecidos na filosofia não legaram à humanidade uma sociedade sem fundamentos, nem mesmo um pessimismo niilista. Ao contrário, o que vemos é uma divinização do humano, por meio da valorização do outro como aquele que nos permite a saída de nós mesmos e, assim, a ultrapassar os limites subjetivistas ao expandir nosso pensamento. Essa divinização é um resultado claro da valorização da liberdade, sendo esta a centelha divina no humano. Afinal, a liberdade é caracteristicamente o que desloca o ser humano para além de todos os determinismos, permitindo, assim, fazer-se a si mesmo. Nesse sentido, o que vemos é um rompimento, segundo Ferry, com todas as formas tradicionais de pensamento e uma superação do religioso e suas seduções. O homem-Deus é, portanto, o grande responsável por todo o processo de secularização: tanto da moral e do amor quanto da própria espiritualidade. Nesse contexto, torna-se visível uma espiritualidade que, aparentemente laica, porque é pautada no ágape secularizado, apresenta-se, antes de tudo, como uma espiritualidade cristã enfraquecida, que não consegue desvencilhar-se, em suas próprias bases, da influência do amor cristão.

The panorama of bioethical problems is different today. Patients travel to Thailand for fast surgery; commercial surrogate mothers in India deliver babies to parents in rich countries; organs, body parts and tissues are trafficked from East to Western Europe; physicians and nurses migrating from Africa to the U.S; thousands of children or patients with malaria, tuberculosis and AIDS are dying each day because they cannot afford effective drugs that are too expensive. Mainstream bioethics as it has developed during the last 50 years in Western countries is evolving into a broader approach that is relevant for people across the world and is focused on new global problems. This book provides an introduction into the new field of global bioethics. Addressing these problems requires a broader vision of bioethics that not only goes beyond the current emphasis on individual autonomy, but that criticizes the social, economic and political context that is producing the problems at global level. This book argues that global bioethics is a necessity because the social, economic and environmental effects of globalization require critical responses.
