This book is a rather personal history of an academic publishing house I chose to call 'Three Acorns Press' in the narrative. I did this to protect nearly 500 authors and the publishing house itself. Not that what I had to say was scandalous or problematic, but rather I wanted to keep personalities out of this story. It is not an autobiographical study of the author, per se, and it is hopefully not the end of the publishing house which has over one hundred and twenty-five titles in print. My personal history is somewhat more complicated and the story of this publishing house has not yet ended. The following is, however, my own recollections of how I began this publishing house and how and why it has grown to be a house of reputation - the winner of the American Library Association Academic Book of the Year award and cited three times by the Ford Foundation and the National Research Council as a leader in the field. I did not set out from school to be a publisher. Though I have always been a lover of books, I never dreamed of actually publishing them. But, a publisher is what I am and this is my story of how it all came about.

The fascinating sports history of defunct teams in baseball, hockey, basketball and more! THEY’RE GOING, GOING, GONE. . . . Their names roll off the tongue, a litany of the damned: the Providence Steam Roller, the Wilmington Quicksteps, the Cincinnati Porkers. They are the lost squads of professional sports history—teams forsaken by fans, fleeced by owners, or forgotten by time. Until now. Kiss ’Em Goodbye unearths the real stories of dozens of vanished teams that once graced—and often disgraced—North America’s big leagues. Like the St. Paul Apostles, the only major league team never to have played a home game; Card-Pitt, the NFL’s World War II doormat; and the Philadelphia Quakers of the NHL, a team owned jointly by bootleggers and a retired boxer who climbed back into the ring to help meet payroll. In obituaries for both big-city franchises that skipped town (the Baltimore Colts, the Brooklyn Dodgers) and small-town teams that had their brief moment of glory (the Tonawanda Kardex, the Pottsville Maroons), Kiss ’Em Goodbye commemorates mysterious fires, waterlogged basketball courts, fields tended by goats (“cheaper than mowers!”), and uniforms that broke team budgets. It’s all here in a fascinating, hilarious, page-turning celebration of teams that prove it’s not whether you win or lose, but that you once played the game.

Goodbye Kant written by Maurizio Ferraris and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-29 with Philosophy categories.

A best seller in Italy, Maurizio Ferraris's Goodbye, Kant! delivers a nontechnical, entertaining, and occasionally irreverent overview of Immanuel Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. He borrows his title from Wolfgang Becker's Goodbye Lenin!, the 2003 film about East Germany after the fall of the Berlin Wall, which depicts both relief at the passing of the Soviet era and affection for the ideals it embodied. Ferraris approaches Kant in similar spirits, demonstrating how the structure that Kant elaborates for the understanding of human knowledge can generate nostalgia for lost aspirations, while still leaving room for constructive criticism. Isolating key themes and concerns in the work, Ferraris evaluates Kant's claims relative to what science and philosophy have come to regard as the conditions for knowledge and experience in the intervening two centuries. He remains attentive to the historical context and ideals from which Kant's Critique emerged but also resolute in identifying what he sees as the limits and blind spots in the work. The result is an accessible account of a notoriously difficult book that will both provoke experts and introduce students to the work and to these important philosophical debates about the relations of experience to science.

"Enjoy your childhood. Have fun while you can." That's what parents tell their children. Jane Adleyn Geiger did enjoy her childhood immensely. Her blessings in life include a Christian upbringing, two wonderful (most of the time) sisters, loving parents, and a middle-class economic privilege. Her story begins with a recreation of her grandparents' and parents' courtship and marriage. Her parents were married just a few days before the Stock Market crashed in 1929, and they suffered many hardships of life over the next few years. Adleyn grew up during the 1950's, and has written this stimulating account of her childhood, her school years, and her musical journey. A teen pregnancy and her subsequent marriage changed the focus of her life from high school, friends, And The possibility of a music conservatory experience to that of family survival. She has included stories of her family, friends, and teachers who helped her succeed along the way. Often hilarious, this nostalgic retelling of her childhood is a universal project of many adults, though many do not have the nerve to put it in writing. Included in the book is a personal letter to each of her children, telling about the special memories that make each one so unique. Adleyn's fascination with shoes - the way they look, The way they feel, And The way the smell (when they're new) has given her a theme For The entire story. During many of the pivotal junctions in her life, her shoes of the times were an integral part of the major events. New shoes became a Rite of Passage to new places in life's journey. Imagine wearing a comfortable pair of Mary Janes while you read this story of courage, perseverance, and determination.

Birdie Greenwing has been at a loose end ever since her beloved twin sister and husband passed away. Too proud and stubborn to admit she is lonely, Birdie’s world has shrunk. Rising from the drug-infested streets of '80s New York City, the incomparable Sonic Youth recorded some of the most important albums in alternative music history and influenced an entire generation of indie rockers. They helped spawn an alternative arts scene of underground films and comics, conceptual art, experimental music, even fashion. More than perhaps any band of their time, they brought art previously considered ''fringe'' into the mainstream - and irrevocably altered the cultural zeitgeist. Based on extensive research, exclusive band interviews, and unprecedented access to unreleased recordings and documents, Goodbye 20th Century is the definitive biography of the Velvet Underground of their generation.
