Reiseberichte gelten in der Germanistik bis heute als vernachlässigbares Genre, obwohl diese traditionsreiche Gattung um ein zentrales Problem der westlichen Gegenwartskultur kreist: der interkulturellen Begegnung mit dem Anderen. Die vorliegende Studie widerlegt die bisherige Forschungsmeinung, daß die Reiseliteratur nach 1945 im Massentourismus aufgegangen und über-flüssig geworden ist. Kernpunkt ist die Analyse von Reiseberichten west- und ostdeutscher Schriftsteller und Schriftstellerinnen nach 1945. Die Autorin untersucht zum einen, wie sich die Reisetexte im Diskurs um Tourismus und Exotik, um Alterität, Identität sowie deren Verstehens- und Wahrnehmungsmöglichkeiten positionieren; und zum anderen, welche Modelle der Alteritätserfahrung, der Selbstwahrnehmung, des Fremdverstehens und der narrativen Darstellung des Anderen die analysierten Autoren entwerfen. Angesiedelt ist die diskursanalytisch ausgerichtete Arbeit am Schnittpunkt von Literatur- und Kulturwissenschaft; sie bezieht wichti-ge Erkenntnisse der Ethnologie, der Alteritäts- und Tourismusforschung ein. Zu den analysierten Reiseberichten gehören u.a. Texte von Hagelstange, Hermlin, Koeppen, Hartlaub, Bachér, Canetti, Fichte, Brinkmann, Fühmann, Kunert, Gernhardt, Drewitz, Grass, Kroetz, Kracht und Sebald.

Autobiographical writings have been a major cultural genre from antiquity to the present time. General questions of the literary as, e.g., the relation between literature and reality, truth and fiction, the dependency of author, narrator, and figure, or issues of individual and cultural styles etc., can be studied preeminently in the autobiographical genre. Yet, the tradition of life-writing has, in the course of literary history, developed manifold types and forms. Especially in the globalized age, where the media and other technological / cultural factors contribute to a rapid transformation of lifestyles, autobiographical writing has maintained, even enhanced, its popularity and importance. By conceiving autobiography in a wide sense that includes memoirs, diaries, self-portraits and autofiction as well as media transformations of the genre, this three-volume handbook offers a comprehensive survey of theoretical approaches, systematic aspects, and historical developments in an international and interdisciplinary perspective. While autobiography is usually considered to be a European tradition, special emphasis is placed on the modes of self-representation in non-Western cultures and on inter- and transcultural perspectives of the genre. The individual contributions are closely interconnected by a system of cross-references. The handbook addresses scholars of cultural and literary studies, students as well as non-academic readers.

Germans Going Global is the first monograph in English to address in depth the interrelatedness between contemporary German literature and globalization. In an interdisciplinary framework and through detailed readings of a wide variety of texts, the study shows how the challenges globalization has posed for Germany over the last two decades have been manifested and reimagined in aesthetic production. Analyses of the literary marketplace and public debates illuminate the more material sides of this development. W.G. Sebald (1944-2001) is the most prominent and perhaps the most enigmatic German-language writer of recent decades. His books have had a more profound impact outside the German-speaking world than those of any other. Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Die vorliegende Arbeit hat die Darstellung des Fremden in ihrer Entwicklungstendenz durch Beispiele der Chinaforschung in Deutschland mit den Sichtweisen der Forscher, den Diskursen und Methoden in der Vergangenheit und Gegenwart zusammengestellt und diskutiert. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden Fremdheitsprofile Chinas, der Chinesen und der chinesischen Kultur in der deutschen Forschungsliteratur (im weitesten Sinne) untersucht. In der Forschung über China sind verschiedene kulturrelativistische und kulturalistische Ansätze verbreitet, die zwar fruchtbare Möglichkeiten bieten, sich China als fremder Kultur zu nähern, jedoch sollten nach Meinung der Verfasserin Kultur bezogene Erklärungen gesellschaftlicher (politischer oder ökonomischer) Vorgänge nicht überschätzt werden. Die Darstellungen Chinas als fremdes Land sind meist xenophob oder xenophil motiviert. Während sich die Chinaforschung mit chinesischer Kultur beschäftigt, findet kaum eine theoretische Reflexion über den Begriff Kultur statt. Ebenso wenig, wie über den Begriff der Kultur reflektiert wird, findet in der Forschung eine Reflexion über die Forschungsmethoden statt, besonders den Kulturvergleich und das Kulturverstehen. Traditionell wurde ein Kulturvergleich oft in der Weise vorgenommen, dass das Chinabild als positives oder negatives Gegenbild zum Westen entworfen wurde. Diese Kontrastierung wird der Wirklichkeit Chinas nicht gerecht. Auch wenn diese Kontrastierung des Westens mit einem einseitgen, entweder positiven oder negativen Chinabild heute durch vielfältige andere Chinadarstellungen ergänzt wird, ist es nötig, sich über den Kulturvergleich Gedanken zu machen. Wie dies aussehen könnte, wurde in der vorliegenden Arbeit gezeigt. Das Ziel der Forschung sollte sein, die Möglichkeiten des Kulturverstehens - sowohl der fremden als auch der eigenen - zu erweitern. Zu diesem Zweck sollte in der kulturtheoretischen Fremdheits- bzw. Chinaforschung eine verstärkte Reflexion über Begriff und Konzept des Kulturverstehens stattfinden, aber auch die Reflexion über das Spannungsverhältnis von Eigenem und Fremdem könnte in der Forschung noch vertieft werden.
