"¿El apego de los indios novohispanos a sus ancestrales tradiciones religiosas fue un síntoma de superstición e idolatría? ¿La interpretación y apropiación local de la ritualidad católica fue un síntoma de ignorancia? Este libro estudia la forma en que la Iglesia novohispana del siglo XVIII, a través del Provisorato de Indios y Chinos del Arzobispado de México, pensó y enfrentó las prácticas religiosas de los naturales. Desde la perspectiva católica y colonial, este tribunal buscaba preservar el bienestar espiritual y moral de los indios, aunque la percepción de éstos no siempre coincidió con ello. Norms beyond Empire seeks to rethink the relationship between law and empire by emphasizing the role of local normative production. While European imperialism is often viewed as being able to shape colonial law and government to its image, this volume argues that early modern empires could never monolithically control how these processes unfolded. Examining the Iberian empires in Asia, it seeks to look at norms as a means of escaping the often too narrow concept of law and look beyond empire to highlight the ways in which law-making and local normativities frequently acted beyond colonial rule. The ten chapters explore normative production from this perspective by focusing on case studies from China, India, Japan, and the Philippines. El presente manuscrito es una compilación de diversas Locuciones Latinas en Materia Jurídica. No es una guía de Derecho. Tampoco una exposición doctrinaria de las locuciones plasmadas, sólo se busca mostrar sencillamente, algunas locuciones y vocablos visualizados en diversos textos, cuyos autores se exponen en la bibliografía, haciendo con mucho respeto hacia ellos. De inicio se muestra un capítulo de "introducción", con lo que se busca explicar la importancia del contenido, se detalla una "breve historia romana" alusiva a los "orígenes de la península italiana", los "pueblos que conformaron la península itálica", sobre todo los pueblos que se establecieron en la región del Lazio, (centro-sur de Italia), los etruscos, (norte-centro de Italia) y los colonizadores griegos que se establecieron en el sur de Italia, todos ellos contribuyeron al crecimiento de Roma a partir de su fundación en el siglo VIII a.C. La obra de "Rómulo y Remo", "La Monarquía", "La República, "El Imperio" (sus emperadores y su ocaso); cómo surge el "Derecho Romano", y "el uso del latín en el derecho". Con la explicación breve en cada una de las locuciones y vocablos, (de las de mayor importancia), se busca explicar el sentido de las mismas, es decir, lo que pensaron y quisieron decirnos los antiguos jurisconsultos romanos. De manera general, se muestra brevemente la historia romana, la conformación del Derecho y las locuciones con una breve explicación.

Offering a provocative new perspective, Healing Like Our Ancestors examines sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Nahua healers in central Mexico and how their practices have been misconstrued and misunderstood in colonial records. Early colonial Spanish settlers defined, assessed, and admonished Nahua titiçih (healing specialists) and tiçiyotl (healing knowledge) in the process of building a society in Mexico that mirrored Iberia. Nevertheless, Nahua survivance (intergenerational knowledge transfer) has allowed communities to heal like their ancestors through changes and adaptations. Edward Anthony Polanco draws from diverse colonial primary sources, largely in Spanish and Nahuatl (the Nahua ancestral language), to explore how Spanish settlers framed titiçih, their knowledge, and their practices within a Western complex. Polanco argues for the usage of Indigenous terms when discussing Indigenous concepts and arms the reader with the Nahuatl words to discuss central Mexican Nahua healing. In particular, this book emphasizes the importance of women as titiçih and highlights their work as creators and keepers of knowledge. These vital Nahua perspectives of healing—and how they differed from the settler narrative—will guide community members as well as scholars and students of the history of science, Latin America, and Indigenous studies.
