Die erste systematische Analyse von Leben und Werk der Vormärz-Frauenrechtlerin und Autorin Louise Dittmar (1807-1884). Im Vormärz brachten Frauen ihre emanzipatorischen Interessen in die Debatten um eine gesellschaftliche Veränderung ein. Louise Dittmars Leitidee war radikal: Frauen sollten sich selbst Zweck sein. Damit kritisierte Dittmar das idealistische Ehekonzept von der harmonischen Einheit des nach außen agierenden Mannes und der im Häuslichen gefühlvoll wirkenden Frau als ideologisches Konstrukt. Das Diktat ›echter‹ Weiblichkeit empfand sie zeitlebens als Zumutung. Wohl deswegen wurden Louise Dittmars politische Schriften fast vollständig vergessen. Die Historikerin Christine Nagel schliesst mit diesem Buch eine Forschungslücke der Geschichts- wie der Literaturwissenschaft.

The philosopher of religion and critic of idealism, Ludwig Feuerbach had a far-reaching impact on German radicalism around the time of the Revolution of 1848. This intellectual history explores how Feuerbach s critique of religion served as a rallying point for radicals, and how they paradoxically sought to create a new, post-religious form of religiosity as part of the revolutionary aim. At issue for the Feuerbachian radicals was the emergence of a humanity emancipated from the constraints of mere institutions, able to express itself freely and harmoniously. Caldwell also touches on Moses Hess, Louise Dittmar, and Richard Wagner in his discussion of the time. Adrian Daub’s The Dynastic Imagination offers an unexpected account of modern German intellectual history through frameworks of family and kinship. Modernity aimed to brush off dynastic, hierarchical authority and to make society anew through the mechanisms of marriage, siblinghood, and love. It was, in other words, centered on the nuclear family. But as Daub shows, the dynastic imagination persisted, in time emerging as a critical stance by which the nuclear family’s conservatism and temporal limits could be exposed. Focusing on the complex interaction between dynasties and national identity-formation in Germany, Daub shows how a lingering preoccupation with dynastic modes of explanation, legitimation, and organization suffused German literature and culture. ? Daub builds this conception of dynasty in a syncretic study of literature, sciences, and the history of ideas, engaging with remnants of dynastic ideology in the work of Richard Wagner, Émile Zola, and Stefan George, and in the work of early feminists and pioneering psychoanalysts. At every stage of cultural progression, Daub reveals how the relation of dynastic to nuclear families inflected modern intellectual history.

Jahrhunderts war definiert als Ehefrau, Hausfrau und Mutter. Der Mann war das rechtliche Oberhaupt der Familie. Diese eheliche Vormundschaft bestand bis ins 20.Jahrhundert. ,,Der Mann ist seiner Frau zu Schutz, und die Frau ihrem Mann zu Gehorsam verbunden" . Nicht jede Frau allerdings wollte oder konnte sich mit dieser Rolle identifizieren. Besonders in politischen Umbruchphasen und der damit einhergehenden Aufbruchstimmung zeigte es sich, dass ,,das schwache Geschlecht" sich nicht nur seiner Fesseln entledigen konnte, sondern auch fähig war, ähnlich den Männern im Alltag und in der politischen Auseinandersetzung zu bestehen. Welche Motive hatten die Frauen? Was trieb sie an? Um diese Frage zu beantworten werde ich mich nachfolgend mit den Biografien von Mathilde Franziska Anneke und Louise Dittmar beschäftigen. Nach der Einleitung und der Beschreibung des historischen Kontextes skizziere ich die rechtliche Situation der Frauen in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Anschließend beschreibe ich die Lebenswege von Mathilde Franziska Anneke und Louise Dittmar in erster Linie bis in das Jahr 1849 soweit dies aus Quellen und Forschungsliteratur nachweisbar ist. Außerdem benutze ich Veröffentlichungen der beiden Frauen.

This first book-length biography with discussions of select writings by Luise Büchner (1821-1877) draws on her commentary of events available in letters and writings. A close reading of Büchner's fictional writings reveals that she both entertained and educated her readers. Her pedagogical messages correspond to ideas she promoted in her work on the «woman question». This in-depth study properly situates her in the changing cultural climate and socio-political developments that led to unification of the German states in 1871. Büchner tested and revised her thoughts on the «woman question» in the course of her practical work as a co-founder of local women's associations and as a member of two competing «national» bourgeois women's organizations.
