Zitovás literary analysis starts at the interface of Czech and German literature in the first half of the twentieth century. Thomas Mann's novel Joseph and His Brothers is set in comparative relation to Ivan Olbracht's prose texts Nikola ?uhaj loupe?ník and Golet v údolí. Olbracht translated three volumes of Mann's Joseph's tetralogy parallel to the composition of his own prose works. Zitová examines the influence of Olbracht's translation work on his own work. Zitovás literaturwissenschaftliche Analyse setzt an einer Schnittstelle der tschechischen und deutschen Literatur in der ersten Hälfte des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts an. Thomas Manns Roman Joseph und seine Brüder wird vergleichend in Beziehung gesetzt zu Ivan Olbrachts in den dreißiger Jahren entstandenen Prosatexten Nikola ?uhaj loupe?ník und Golet v údolí. Olbracht übersetzte parallel zur Abfassung seiner Prosawerke insgesamt drei Bände aus Manns umfangreicher Josephs-Tetralogie. Diese Übersetzertätigkeit blieb, wie Zitová aufzeigt, nicht ohne Einfluss auf sein eigenes Schaffen. Das Buch knüpft an eine von Jirí Opelík geschriebene Studie Olbrachts reife Schaffensperiode sub specie seiner Übersetzungen aus Thomas Mann und Lion Feuchtwanger (1967) an, in der dieser tschechische Literaturwissenschaftler das Thema eröffnete. Mit Zitovás Tiefenanalyse schließt sich diese germanobohemistische Forschungslücke.

This is a postmodernist history of the historical novel with special attention to the political implications of the postmodernist attitude toward the past. Beginning with the poetics of Sir Walter Scott, Wesseling moves via a global survey of 19th century historical fiction to modernist innovations in the genre. Noting how the self-reflexive strategy enables a novelist to represent an episode from the past alongside the process of gathering and formulating historical knowledge, the author discusses the elaboration of this strategy, introduced by novelists such as Virginia Woolf and William Faulkner, in the work of, among others, Julian Barnes, Jay Cantor, Robert Coover and Graham Swift.Wesseling also shows how postmodernist writers attempt to envisage alternative sequences for historical events. The premise of this book is that the theme of being and meaning in Thomas Mann's novel tetralogy Joseph und seine Bruder unites the novel's stylistic and thematic structure. The author demonstrates persuasively how these leading ideas are worked out in detail, pervading plot-structure, symbolism, characterization and narration. Through a subtle series of analyses - of the concepts of time and identity underlying the novel, its image-patterns, the changing psychology of its characters, above all Joseph's process of individuation and the narrator's changing behaviour - patterns of overlap and discrepancy between being and meaning are brought out in such a way as to unite many parts of the novel into an overall coherent structure of meaning. The analysis makes use of Jungian theory to explain the mythical dimension and the emergence of consciousness from it. Jungian concepts are applied deftly and offer real insights into the early psychology of myth and its late psychologizing by mythologists, as presented in the novels. There is much fresh thinking here to stimulate a fuller understanding and enjoyment of Mann's representing of the biblical Joseph story.
