Examines Bergson’s work from the perspectives of critical philosophy of race and decolonial theory, placing it in conversation with theorists from Africa, the African Diaspora, and Latin America. Building upon recent interest in Henri Bergson’s social and political philosophy, this volume offers a series of fresh and novel perspectives on Bergson’s writings through the lenses of critical philosophy of race and decolonial theory. Contributors place Bergson’s work in conversation with theorists from Africa, the African Diaspora, and Latin America to examine Bergson’s influence on literature, science studies, aesthetics, metaphysics, and social and political philosophy within these geopolitical contexts. The volume pays particular attention to both theoretical and practical forms of critical resistance work, including historical analyses of anti-racist, anti-imperialist, and anti-capitalist movements that have engaged with Bergson’s writings—for example, the Négritude movement, the Indigenismo movement, and the Peruvian Socialist Party. These historical and theoretical intersections provide a timely and innovative contribution to the existing scholarship on Bergson, and demonstrate the importance of his thought for contemporary social and political issues. Andrea J. Pitts is Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. Mark William Westmoreland is a doctoral candidate and instructor of ethics and philosophy at Villanova University.

Treatments of the reception of Darwinism have focused on Western Europe and North America. This book turns to Argentina in the second half of the nineteenth century. Having hosted Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle, Argentina had a claim to being the cradle of Darwinism. Such claims, together with other cultural currents placed the appropriation or rejection of Darwinism at the center of the struggle to articulate the national identity of the emerging Argentine Republic. Two chapters of original historiography are followed by eight chapters of new English translations of primary sources from the Argentine reception of Darwinism, including texts (by Domingo Sarmiento, Eduardo Holmberg, and others) well known to students of Latin American letters, but never before published in English.

El libro propone un abordaje de la Fenomenología de la percepción desde la primera obra fenomenológica de Merlau-Ponty recuperando el concepto aristotélico de sensación como respuesta a posibles inconsistencias en el pensamiento del autor. En una primera parte, se expone el pensamiento de Maerlau-Ponty, poniéndose de manifiesto el enorme componente existencial implicado en la percepción de un objeto. Luego, se incorpora en la noción aristotélica de sensación como propuesta para dar solución a las dificultades que Merleau-Ponty dejaría irresueltas respecto de las condiciones de posibilidad de la percepción. Se intenta, entonces, describir, sin postulaciones ni sobresaltos, la transición de la Fenomenología a la metafísica, evitándose privilegiar una en menoscabo de la otra, y mostrando más bien su útil e incluso necesaria complementariedad.

Ces Annales sont consacrées aux communications et travaux présentés en novembre 2007 lors du Congrès de l'Année Bergson célébrant le centenaire de la publication de L'évolution créatrice, parrainé par le Collège de France et l'École normale supérieure-Ulm, deux institutions au sein desquelles Bergson enseigna. Le propre des grands livres de philosophie est de dépasser la "réception" qui a leur a été faite : la lecture des études qui suivent est donc un encouragement à revenir vers le texte de L'évolution créatrice. Il faut maintenir, par-delà la diversité des points de vue, cette exigence de la lecture caractérisée à la fois par la recherche de l'unité de la thèse centrale du livre et par la relation entre les questions de l'auteur et celles que se posent le lecteur. On trouvera dans ces travaux, dans une première partie : un renouveau de l'étude historique, une confrontation directe et critique avec certaines des thèses sur le vivant, interrogeant le rapport de Bergson à la science. La seconde partie est métaphysique et porte sur les aspects historiques de la matière, du néant, du lien avec la religion, avec la science, sur la spécificité de la métaphysique bergsonienne, et sur le concept du vital distinct de l'image de l'élan vital. Un siècle plus tard, une relecture du problème du vivant tel qu'il se présente toujours entre "épistémologie" et "métaphysique".
