स्वामी विवेकानन्दजी ने अमेरिका, लंदन और भारत में कर्म-रहस्य (Secret of work) पर जो व्याख्यान दिये थे उसी का यह हिन्दी अनुवाद है। तथापि ‘कर्मयोग’ पुस्तक से यह पुस्तक भिन्न है। ‘कर्म क्या है और अकर्म क्या है, इस विषय में बुद्धिमान भी मोहित हो जाते हैं।’ कोई भी मनुष्य क्षणमात्र भी कर्म किये बिना नहीं रहता, क्योंकि सभी प्राणी प्रकृति से उत्पन्न ‘सत्त्व, रज और तम’ इन तीन गुणों द्वारा कर्म में प्रवृत्त किये जाते है’ ऐसा भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने भगवद्गीता में कहा है। जो कर्म मनुष्य को बन्धनकारी होते हैं, वे ही कर्म मनुष्य को मुक्त कराने में कैसे साधन हो सकते हैं, इसका ‘रहस्य’ स्वामीजी ने इस पुस्तक में उजागर किया है। हमारे कर्म हमारी उपासना हो सकती है और कर्म करते हुए हम सदैव अनासक्त रह सकते हैं; तथा हमारा क्षुद्र अहंभाव कर्मयोग में विलीन हो जाता है, एवं ‘मैं आत्मा हूँ, ब्रह्म हूँ’ इस आत्मानुभूति का अलौकिक आनन्द हम कैसे प्राप्त कर सकते हैं, यह ज्ञान स्वामीजी ने आधुनिक युग में उद्घाटित किया है।
