Wie facettenreich die Beziehungen zwischen Utopie und Ökonomie tatsächlich sind, zeigt das breite thematische Spektrum, das von den Autorinnen und Autoren aus Kultur-, Sozial- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften verhandelt wird: Es reicht von anarchokommunistischen Öko-Utopien der Gegenwartsliteratur bis zu Maschinenmenschen in der Malerei, von ökonomisch-utopischen Diskursen in der Populärkultur bis zu den Ideen des kybernetischen Sozialismus, von der philosophischen Reflexion des Glücksspiels als inner- und gegenkapitalistische Utopie bis hin zur Diskussion utopischer Dimensionen heutiger neoklassischer Wirtschaftstheorie. This book examines utopias in classical political economy and is based on the papers presented by leading scholars at the 22nd Heilbronn Symposium in the Economics and the Social Sciences. The book focuses on the tension between the State and utopia (the State as utopia vs. utopia instead of a state). The contributors also study the question of whether seafaring and landlocked states visualize the commonwealth differently and develop different utopias, and it is concluded they do not. The volume therefore follows the refutation of the Schumpeterian Hypothesis that more concentrated industries stimulate innovation. Though the hypothesis is refuted it still remains important, the chapters argue, because it charts out an entire research program, serves as a benchmark of definite public and private sector boundaries, and defines the grammar of discourse for constitutional economic policy in OECD states. These themes are explored in detail through contributions by economists, philosophers, and social historians. The contributors examine utopias hitherto never or rarely reviewed in the English language, making this book of interest to students and scholars in economics, political science and the history of economic thought.

Rudolf Bahro, Wolfgang Harich and Robert Havemann were probably the best-known critics of the DDR’s ruling Socialist Unity Party. Yet they saw themselves as Marxists, and their demands extended far beyond a democratisation of real socialism. When environmental issues became more important in the West in the 1970s, the Party treated it as an ideological manoeuvre of the class enemy. The three dissidents saw things differently: they combined socialism and ecology, adopting a utopian perspective frowned upon by the state. In doing so, they created political concepts that were unique for the Eastern Bloc. Alexander Amberger introduces them, relates them to each other, and poses the question of their relevance then and now.
