This book examines three exhibitions of contemporary art held at the Vienna Künstlerhaus during the period of National Socialist rule and shows how each attempted to culturally erase elements anathema to Nazi ideology: the City, the Jewess and fin-de-siècle Vienna. Each of the exhibits was large scale and ambitious, part of a broader attempt to situate Vienna as the cultural capital of the Reich, and each aimed to reshape cultural memory and rewrite history. What does "magic of nature" mean? Starting with the placebo effect and its relevance for biomedical research and clinical practice of today, this treatise focusses on diverse historical concepts of the "healing power of nature". This topos was fundamental for natural medicine, life reform movement, suggestive therapy, hypnotism, romantic natural philosophy, and mesmerism. Such a retrospection leads to the crucial concept of "natural magic" (Latin: magia naturalis), which was essential for early modern medicine and natural science. So, Nature was personified in many ways as a wise woman or magician, mystically adored by alchemists. At the end, the study returns to the present age. It reflects critically modern sexology and sexual medicine confronting them with certain spritually guided practices of "sexual magic". Die Begegnung mit dem ‚Anderen’ stellt ein anthropologisches Grundverhältnis dar. Menschen unterhalten Beziehungen zueinander, lehnen sich aneinander an, grenzen sich voneinander ab, ahmen sich gegenseitig nach oder passen sich an. Die Identität des Einzelnen wie der Gruppe erwächst aus der Differenz und der Abgrenzung, entwickelt sich also durch Konfrontationen und Irritationen in Beziehungen zu anderen Menschen, Dingen und vor allem: anderem Denken. ‚Anders’ ist selbst ein relationaler Begriff, und da wir uns mit der Neutralität so schwer tun, heißt er im Prozess der Einschätzung und Bewertung letztlich immer: anders als ich, anders als ich denke oder will. Ob nun etwas als andersartig erlebt und mit welchen Bewertungen es konnotiert wird, variiert je nach Situationsdefinition, Deutungsmustern und Ordnungsleistungen, je nach subjektiven Vorverständnissen und der eigenen Selbstverortung. Das ‚Andere’ ist somit eine Konstruktionsleistung des Subjekts, eine Abgrenzungsmaßnahme, ein aktives ‚Othering’, und das Verstehen des ‚Anderen’ ist eine Tätigkeit, die auf Akten des Selbstverstehens, der Selbstauslegung beruht. Geschlechterforschung und Psychoanalyse sind beide zentral, wenn auch je unterschiedlich mit dem Thema der Andersheit, Fremdheit und dem Verhältnis zum Anderen befasst, deshalb lohnt es sich, zu prüfen, was sie jeweils zu der Frage beitragen können, wie sich die verschiedenen Differenzierungs- und Abgrenzungskategorien zueinander verhalten.
