La noblesse, dans le royaume de Castille, n'a - jusqu'à présent - fait l'objet d'aucune étude d'ensemble. L'ouvrage de Marie-Claude Gerbet, qui choisit l'Estrémadure comme cadre régional et la période 1454-1516, capitale dans l'histoire nobiliaire, comme limites chronologiques, vient combler cette lacune. De l'examen de la noblesse - comme groupe social - et de ses structures familiales, ressortent certains caractères dominants : la disparité entre les trois niveaux de la noblesse et entre aînés et cadets, le rôle capital joué par le roi dans l'enrichissement et dans l'ascension sociale. Les nobles jouent un rôle politique, local et national. Divisés en factions rivales, en bandos, leur mode d'action politique est la conjuration. Ils dominent en grande partie la vie municipale, très teintée de « caciquisme », mais cessent peu à peu d'influencer, en tant qu'Ordre, les destinées de l'État. Certains de ces caractères généraux dureront pendant toute la période « moderne », et marqueront même la vie coloniale.

Dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle est apparue l'opinion selon laquelle les Rois Catholiques, dans un but mercantile, auraient délibérément favorisé l'élevage - et particulièrement l'élevage transhumant - au détriment des cultures, laissant les mains libres aux grands propriétaires de troupeaux regroupés au sein de la Mesta. Notamment illustré par Julius Klein (The Mesta, 1920), ce courant historiographique est aujourd'hui contesté. Le dépouillement du Registro General del Sello, un fonds d'un intérêt exceptionnel couvrant les années 1475 à 1516 et renfermant des documents concernant plus de 1.600 litiges relatifs à l'élevage, a permis à l'auteur de décrire avec précision l'évolution de l'élevage local, puis de l'élevage transhumant, et de proposer un essai de cartographie des cañadas, qui reliaient les pâturages d'été aux régions d'hivernage. Restaurateurs plutôt qu'innovateurs, capables de fermeté à l'égard des grands éleveurs, les Rois Catholiques semblent s'être surtout préoccupés, au sortir d'une période de recul démographique et de récession agricole, de maintenir de façon pragmatique un équilibre certes fragile entre élevage local, élevage transhumant et cultures.
