La noblesse, dans le royaume de Castille, n'a - jusqu'à présent - fait l'objet d'aucune étude d'ensemble. L'ouvrage de Marie-Claude Gerbet, qui choisit l'Estrémadure comme cadre régional et la période 1454-1516, capitale dans l'histoire nobiliaire, comme limites chronologiques, vient combler cette lacune. De l'examen de la noblesse - comme groupe social - et de ses structures familiales, ressortent certains caractères dominants : la disparité entre les trois niveaux de la noblesse et entre aînés et cadets, le rôle capital joué par le roi dans l'enrichissement et dans l'ascension sociale. Les nobles jouent un rôle politique, local et national. Divisés en factions rivales, en bandos, leur mode d'action politique est la conjuration. Ils dominent en grande partie la vie municipale, très teintée de « caciquisme », mais cessent peu à peu d'influencer, en tant qu'Ordre, les destinées de l'État. Certains de ces caractères généraux dureront pendant toute la période « moderne », et marqueront même la vie coloniale.
