Bislang wurde der Parzival Wolframs von Eschenbach als Artus- oder Gralsroman in den gattungshistorischen Kontext der Zeit um 1200 eingeordnet. Ruth Sassenhausen appliziert erstmals die traditionell fur die Romanliteratur seit dem 18. Jahrhundert vindizierte Kategorie des Entwicklungsromans auf das mittelalterliche Erzahlwerk. Der innovative Ansatz wird durch die Fokussierung der Interpretation auf die Entwicklung des Helden, den Rekurs auf die mittelalterliche Theorie der Lebensalter sowie eine literaturpsychologische Herangehensweise fundiert. Im Kontext der Analyse wird deutlich, dass bereits von der Spatantike bis zum Hochmittelalter eine etablierte historische Psychologie existierte, die unter Berucksichtigung epochaler Unterschiede auch Ahnlichkeiten mit modernen wissenschaftlichen Einsichten aus der Entwicklungspsychologie aufweist. Aufgrund seiner an mittelalterlichen Konzepten der Lebensalter orientierten Erzahlordnung kann damit der Parzival als Lebensalterroman, eine dem Entwicklungsroman untergeordnete Gattung, bestimmt werden.
