Governments and manufacturing sectors alike now require universities to produce highly qualified human resources, as well as scientific output and quality technology, which is giving rise to a climate of debate and rethinking on postgraduate policies. This book analyzes recent trends in postgraduate courses in Latin America, their development and their main features from a perspective that, among other aspects, encompasses national educational traditions, social and political processes and international influences, which have increasing influence over national higher education systems. Mabel Dávila holds a Master's Degree in Social Sciences with a mention in Education from the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO - Argentina). A researcher as well as undergraduate and postgraduate professor at several Argentine and international universities, she is a member of the Educational Studies Center (Centro de Altos Estudios en Educación) at the Inter-American Open University (UAI). The author acts as a consultant on educational policies for various national and international bodies and has written a number of publications on higher education in Argentina and Latin America.

El sistema educativo español, no sale muy bien parado en las evaluaciones que realiza cada tres años el informe PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) quedando claramente por debajo de la media europea. En este sentido, las críticas sobre el mismo achacan una educación mala y cara, no compensándose el gasto en inversión con los resultados obtenidos. Ello es debido en gran parte, a los continuos cambios legislativos que han producido una constante indefinición e inestabilidad en la estructura educativa, así como a la falta de motivación estudiantil y el poco respeto mantenido hacia el profesorado. Ciertamente, la educación es uno de los derechos humanos consagrados en la Carta Internacional de Derechos Humanos promulgada en 1948 y por ello es fundamental que los Estados luchen por adecuar sus sistemas educativos, evitando en la mayor medida el fracaso escolar. Porque son los sistemas educativos los que organizan el paso de individuo en su derecho de recibir educación y la educación ayuda a garantizar la igualdad y la no discriminación. Por este motivo, es una constante preocupación que los gobiernos favorezcan las condiciones necesarias para garantizar una educación apropiada a su ciudadanía. En este contexto, las universidades tienen como una inquietud primordial la revisión de las metodologías que mejor garanticen el éxito de su estudiantado. De hecho, el artículo 89.5 de la LOMLOU establece que «... las universidades impulsarán la realización de programas dirigidos a la renovación metodológica de la enseñanza universitaria para el cumplimiento de los objetivos de calidad del Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior».
