I saw Anne Frank as a friend I never had the chance to meet. --Joy Gafa' Your diary was indeed a gift to the world, but I would gladly give up that gift if only you had been able to survive the war. --Yvonne Leslie Anne taught me some of the most important life lessons, she showed me the way to writing, and she taught me to laugh. --Anne Talvaz "Meeting" Anne Frank: An Anthology celebrates in words and art the stories of twenty of us who have walked with Anne Frank and her family over the course of the last seventy-five years since Anne and her older sister Margot died from typhus, starvation, and Nazi cruelty in Bergen-Belsen in 1945. None writing here actually "met" or knew Anne personally, but we have "talked" to her and "journeyed" with her kindred spirit. Anne Frank unites us at a time when so much of the world is riven by the familiar and divisive themes of partisan politics, anti-Semitism, and prejudice. We will also be meeting those who did know Anne's "most adorable father" Otto, and they have kindly shared their vivid stories in this volume. We cherish the loving father-daughter relationship that has come to mean so much for many of us while not forgetting to also honor Anne's loving mother Edith and her patient sister Margot. Others writing here have met Anne's surviving school friends, and we honor their rich journeys. Anne Frank has become the sister, mother, wife, daughter, girlfriend, or best friend to each of us writing for this anthology. We honor the happy and tragic story of Anne's brief life, recognizing the "two Annes" in both her sense of fun and mischief and her growing self-awareness in hiding. She was a child while she lived freely in Merwedeplein, Amsterdam, and barely a teenager when she died in a Nazi concentration camp for the simple "crime" of being Jewish. Anne wanted to "go on living after [her] death" in February or March 1945, and I hope we have honored her lasting wish in this work.

A truly heartfelt and engaging book...The writing is insightful and thoughtful... detailed research really and truly make this a memorable and important read. —Pacific Book Review This anthology will be a welcome addition to the body of work about Anne’s short life and her enduring legacy. [It is] worthy of inclusion in libraries and archives. (Recommended) —US Review of Books Thoroughly researched and very thoughtfully and carefully edited. —Dr. Laureen Nussbaum (childhood friend of Anne and Margot Frank) “Meeting” Anne Frank: An Anthology captures the stories of some twenty of us who have walked with Anne Frank and her sister Margot as kindred spirits over the course of the many decades that have elapsed since both girls died from typhus and Nazi cruelty in Bergen-Belsen in 1945. None writing here actually “met” or knew Anne personally, but we have “talked” to her and “journeyed” with her kindred spirit. Anne Frank unites us at a time when so much of the world is riven by the familiar and divisive themes of partisan politics, anti-Semitism, and prejudice. You will, though, be meeting those who did know Anne’s “most adorable father” Otto, and they have kindly shared their vivid stories in this volume. You will be seeing how we cherish not just the loving father-daughter relationship that has come to mean so much for many of us, but also the inspiration of Anne’s patient mother Edith and her “ladylike” older sister Margot. Several of Anne’s surviving school friends also appear in the journeys undertaken by a number of my contributors. In the years since she died in 1945, Anne Frank has become variously the sister, mother, wife, daughter, girlfriend, or best friend to each of us writing for this anthology and to many in the wider world. We honor the happy and tragic story of Anne’s brief life and recognize the existence of, at least, “two Annes” in both her sense of fun and mischief and in her growing self-awareness while in hiding. Anne was only a child while she lived freely at Merwedeplein 37 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and barely a teenager when she died in a Nazi concentration camp for the simple “crime” of being Jewish. Anne wanted to “go on living after [her] death” in February or March 1945, and I hope we have honored her lasting wish in this work.

Anne Frank's diary is one of the most recognised and widely read books of the Second World War. Hundreds of thousands of people visit the Anne Frank House on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam each year to see the annexe where Anne and her family hid from the occupying forces, before eventually being deported to Auschwitz in 1944. Only Anne's father, Otto, survived the Holocaust. Anne Frank: The Collected Works includes each of the versions of Anne's world-famous diary including the 'A' and 'B' diaries now in continuous, readable form, and the definitive text ('D') edited by renowned translator and author Mirjam Pressler. For the first time readers have access to Anne's letters, personal reminiscences, daydreams, essays and notebook of favourite quotes. Also included are background essays by notable writers such as historian Gerhard Hirschfeld (University of Stuttgart) and Francine Prose (Bard College) on topics such as 'Anne Frank's Life', 'The History of the Frank Family' and 'The Publication History of Anne Frank's diary', as well as numerous photographs of the Franks and the other occupants of the annexe. An essential book for scholars and general readers alike, The Collected Works brings together for the first time Anne Frank's complete writings, together with important images and documents. Supported by the Anne Frank Fonds in Basel, Switzerland, set up by Otto Frank to act as the guardian of Anne's work, this is a landmark publication marking the anniversary of 90 years since Anne's birth in 1929.

Hiding from the Nazis in the "Secret Annexe" of an old office building in Amsterdam, a thirteen-year-old girl named Anne Frank became a writer. The now famous diary of her private life and thoughts reveals only part of Anne's story, however. This book completes the portrait of this remarkable and talented young author. Tales from the Secret Annex is a complete collection of Anne Frank's lesser-known writings: short stories, fables, personal reminiscences, and an unfinished novel. Here, too, are portions of the diary originally withheld from publication by her father. By turns fantastical, rebellious, touching, funny, and heartbreaking, these writings reveal the astonishing range of Anne Frank's wisdom and imagination--as well as her indomitable love of life. Anne Frank's Tales from the Secret Annex is a testaments to this determined young woman's extraordinary genius and to the persistent strength of the creative spirit.

“Prose’s book is a stunning achievement. . . . Now Anne Frank stands before us. . . a figure who will live not only in history but also in the literature she aspired to create.” — Minneapolis Star Tribune In June, 1942, Anne Frank received a diary for her thirteenth birthday, just weeks before she and her family went into hiding from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic. For two years, she described life in hiding in vivid, unforgettable detail and grappled with the unfolding events of World War II. Before the attic was raided in August, 1944, Anne Frank furiously revised and edited her work, crafting a piece of literature that she hoped would be read by the public after the war. And read it has been. In Anne Frank, bestselling author Francine Prose deftly parses the artistry, ambition, and enduring influence of Anne Frank’s beloved classic, The Diary of a Young Girl. She investigates the diary’s unique afterlife: the obstacles and criticism Otto Frank faced in publishing his daughter’s words; the controversy surrounding the diary’s Broadway and film adaptations, and the social mores of the 1950s that reduced it to a tale of adolescent angst and love; the conspiracy theories that have cried fraud, and the scientific analysis that proved them wrong. Finally, having assigned the book to her own students, Prose considers the rewards and challenges of teaching one of the world’s most read, and banned, books. How has the life and death of one girl become emblematic of the lives and deaths of so many, and why do her words continue to inspire? Approved by both the Anne Frank House Foundation in Amsterdam and the Anne Frank-Fonds in Basel, run by the Frank family, Anne Frank unravels the fascinating story of a memoir that has become one of the most compelling, intimate, and important documents of modern history.
