July of 1863 the War between the states has entered its second year and shows no sign of ceasing. With the Army of Northern Virginia advancing through Maryland, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan leads a raid through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio to bring the war the North and try and draw Union troops away from other parts of the country. In the town of Marietta, Ohio many men, including two friends, enlist in the state militia to protect their homes and are sent to the old Fort Harmar and ordered to prepare for its defense. However, their officers are as green as the men and as they build and try to drill they wonder if Morgan will come their way and if he does, how will they stand up against the best the South has to offer.

This is the legend of Morgan's Raiders--as it's never been told before. . . In the summer of 1863, Brigadier-General John Hunt Morgan led two thousand Confederate soldiers across the Ohio River into southern Indiana. Pursued by fifteen thousand Union cavalry, infantry, and militia, Morgan's Raiders blazed a trail of destruction unparalleled in Civil War history. In forty-six days, they covered one thousand miles, destroyed thirty-four bridges, and captured six thousand enemy soldiers. But only a handful of Morgan's men would live to tell the tale. . . Born in the heart of Kentucky, Ty Mattson never knew his parents. His mother died in childbirth while his father went off to fight in the Mexican War. For seventeen years, Ty never discovered why his father didn't return. But when he receives news that his father is alive--and he's joined the forces of General John Morgan--the boy leaves home to enlist with the Raiders, hoping to finally meet the father he never had. Owen Mattson turns out to be everything Ty imagined he would be: a good man, a true mentor and a great soldier. But the bullets of a self-appointed Confederate assassin divide father and son yet again, leaving Ty near death. From the blood-soaked chaos of Morgan's devastating defeat at Buffington Island, to the care of an enemy nurse and the harsh brutality of a Union prison, Ty Mattson will do whatever it takes to fight and survive. For his father. For the love of a beautiful woman. For revenge. Filled with military action and fascinating historical detail, Raiding with Morgan is award-winning author Jim R. Woolard at his page-turning best. North to Glory "We are bound for the Ohio in a bold bid to carry the war and its bloodletting and destruction into the enemy's lair. We will etch the terror and fright of our passage in the minds of every man, woman and child we encounter as well as those who hide in fear of us. The fame and glory garnered by our victories will shine forever in the hearts of our southern brethren and earn us the hatred of northern sympathizers. May the Lord ride with us." --Journal of Lieutenant Clinton J. Hardesty, Morgan's Confederate Cavalry, 7 July, 1863.

For most of his fellow Kentuckians, the accomplishments of Thomas Hunt Morgan have been overshadowed by the Civil War exploits of his uncle, the Confederate raider. Thomas Hunt Morgan: Pioneer of Genetics shows that feats performed on the frontiers of science can be as exciting as battlefield heroics, and that the "other Morgan" was as colorful a man as the general. Thomas Hunt Morgan's most noted work, done between 1910 and 1920 at Columbia University, revealed many of the secrets if genetics. Studying hundreds of generations of the fruit fly Drosophilia melanogaster, he and the other scientists in the laboratory called the Fly Room made basic discoveries about chromosomes and the mechanism of inheritance. For these discoveries, which profoundly affected biological theory, Morgan was awarded a Nobel Prize—the first ever given for research in genetics. Morgan was interested in many other problems in biology as well. His embryological and regeneration studies were of fundamental importance, and they too bear the mark of a scientist convinced that nature herself will provide answers to the fundamental questions of life, provided that a suitable experimental approach can be devised. Yet, despite his deep-rooted connections to Kentucky and his achievements as a Nobel prize-winning scientist, Thomas Hunt Morgan remains one of the least-known famous Kentucky sons.

The Civil War as seen through the diaries of a brother and sister-one who had to fight it, and one who had to stay home and live it. Volume 1 - Sarah Fowler Morgan A Confederate Girl's Diary Volume 2 - James Morris Morgan Recollections of a Rebel Reefer Born into Baton Rouge society, Sarah Fowler Morgan grew up with all the privileges that wealth and southern social class could afford. That idyllic life, however, was soon shattered by the Civil War. Between March 1862 and April 1865, Miss. Morgan kept a diary of her experiences. It is the story of both unbelievable heroism and craven cowardice, as the citizens of an entire nation adjust and endure during the worst time they will ever know. Blanketing it all was a pervasive climate of fear-the personal fears of day to day living, and the long-term fears of what would happen to their beloved Confederacy. In the span of just three years, Sarah Morgan lost her father, three brothers, her home and her country. She records it all in: MORGAN'S WAR "One of the most riveting Civil War reads you will ever have-made all the more compelling by the fact that every bit of it actually happened."
