Most of the world knows Uruguay only for its soccer team, or its vaunted title as the "Switzerland of South America," an enduring moniker given to the country for its earlier social welfare policies and relative stability. Even many scholarly narratives of Latin America fail to integrate the country into historical accounts, reducing the country to, as one historian has explained, "a periphery within the periphery that is Latin America." This volume challenges that characterization, taking one of the most innovative small states in the region and analyzing its transnational influence on the world. Uruguay in Transnational Perspective takes a broad look at the country’s three-hundred-year history, connecting imperial practices and resistance, Afro-Latin movements, and feminist firebrands, among others to understand how the country and its citizens have influenced and shaped regional and global historical narratives in a way that has thus far been overlooked. With a true collaboration between scholars of the Global North and Global South, the volume is both transnational in its scholarly focus and its production. Its interdisciplinary nature offers a broad range of perspectives from leading scholars in the field to re-evaluate Uruguay’s impact on the global stage.

Borges Between History And Eternity written by Hernan Diaz and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-08-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

That Borges is one of the key figures in 20th-century literature is beyond debate. The reasons behind this claim, however, are a matter of contention. In Latin America he is read as someone who reorganized the canon, questioned literary hierarchies, and redefined the role of marginal literatures. On the other hand, in the rest of the world, most readers (and dictionaries) tend to identify the adjective "Borgesian" with intricate metaphysical puzzles and labyrinthine speculations of universal reach, completely detached from particular traditions. One reading is context-saturated, while the other is context-deprived. Oddly enough, these "institutional" and "transcendental" approaches have not been pitched against each other in a critical way. Borges, between History and Eternity brings these perspectives together by considering key aspects of Borges's work-the reciprocal determinations of politics, philosophy and literature; the simultaneously confining and emancipating nature of language; and the incipient program for a literature of the Americas.

. Trans. Edith Moss Jackson The Worthy of My Race: Social Sketches, is a bilingual edition of Jorje Miguel Fords biographies, published in 1899. The United Nations, declaring that 2012 initiates the Decade of the Afrodescendant, encourages the recovery of such texts. This translation broadens readership of the biographies to English speakers, while offering the Spanish text for others desiring the original. Fords difficult style required that the translator render the text with flexibility. Ford selected fourteen Afro-Argentine men as motivational icons for contemporary Afro-Argentine youths who, like the massive waves of European immigrants, were unaware of the Afrodescendants crucial contributions to the nations construction and development. These biographies, with original photographs, document the achievements of Afro-Argentines that challenged the prevailing racialized ideologies of the period.

This edited volume brings together essays that examine recent scholarship on the history of the Rio de la Plata region (present-day Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and southern Brazil) from the colonial period to the nineteenth century. It illustrates new themes and historical methods that have transformed the historiography of Rio de la Plata, including the use of new sources, digital methodologies and techniques, and innovative approaches to the already well-studied themes of gender, race, commerce, the slave trade, indigenous history, and economic, political, and military history. Contributions privilege trans-national and Atlantic approaches to the Rio de la Plata, emphasizing the inter-connections of processes beyond imperial and national lines, and aiming at uncovering the history of Africans and Amerindians, popular classes, women, urban groups, as well as the partnerships created across the Spanish and Portuguese imperial borders, which also involved other agents from Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States. Furthermore, each chapter offers historiographical introductions covering scholarship produced in the twenty-first century. This book will be an indispensable and unique tool for English speaking students of colonial and nineteenth-century Rio de la Plata and for those with a broader interest in Latin American and Atlantic History.
